[HOUSE] MSA Gold Reserves Audit

Post by Coin »

Representative Esteban Perez, House Minority Whip, NM wrote:Esteemed Representatives of the Mountain States of America,

It will not have gone unnoticed by you all that the issue of the gold reserves of these Mountain States has reappeared in the news. I am not going to begin a debate on the relative merits or weaknesses of Mr Dorian's propositions - that I leave for the media and a relevant debate.

This draft bill would begin an audit however of these gold reserves. I have, in order to ease any nerves about the bill, added no clause requiring the results of the audit to go beyond the Secretary of the Treasury and senior members of the House Committee on the Budget. Personally I do not feel that the gold reserves' size ought to be known by our neighbors or potential adversaries. But I am sure that we all can agree that it is imperative that the size of such an asset be ascertained so that the chance of fraud, theft, misuse or overestimation - however apparently minute - be entirely minimal.

I do not believe it requires Committee amendment, but I put this bill to the Speaker for his moving on to the floor of House, or for referral to committee.

Representative Arthur Robertson wrote: While it wouldn't hurt to know the exact extent of one of our main economic assets, the Socialist Party believes that even the proposed number of people informed is too much. This is an issue, after all, of national security and central to our sovereignty. We therefore propose that the audit be carried out by the Department of the Treasury, which will issue a report and brief the Secretary of the Treasury and the President on the findings.

If these amendments are added we would support this measure.

Representative Esteban Perez, NM wrote:I thank the Speaker for referring this to Committee; though I do find it odd it did not go to the Budget Committee, I will welcome the committee's thoughts.

As far as Representative Robertson's comments go, I would agree but suggest a compromise wherein the Chair of the Committee on the Budget is informed with each new Congress. I entirely support his other comments.
