SPANISH ATROCITIES CONTINUE
While President McKinley's administration continues to seek a "peaceful solution", the
New York World maintains its fierce reporting on the Cuban War of Independence, perhaps the last great struggle for liberty in this our 19th century. While access to the treacherous battlefronts of Cuba is limited, our dedicated correspondents go where no other journalists - especially not the cowardly reporters employed by the
New York Journal, who according to our informants are currently hiding in a Havanan hotel - will go. The latest news from the beautiful, tropical island are grim as ever - sometime during November, the renowned poet and freedom fighter, Mr. Francisco Gonzalo Marín, was killed following a deadly skirmish with the Spanish colonial forces outside of Turiguanó.
Every day the courageous forces of the Cuban patriots, who seek naught but liberty for themselves and their families, advances. During this past year, they have won spectacular victories in the "Battle of La Reforma", and forced the surrender of Las Tunas on August 30. Still, they are deeply outnumbered by Spain. So far, up to 200,000 men have been deployed in the conflict, and daily atrocities towards the civilian populace are taking place. The death toll on the innocent is truly staggering, perhaps as many as a hundred thousand or more! All this, only a few miles from the coast of Florida. It is no wonder that the McKinley administration is facing a strong call from every area of American society: Intervene! No real American patriot can sit by and watch Cuba go up in flames.
