US Expansionism

Estados Unidos Mexicanos
The Mexican people cry out in anguish at the fate inflicted on our brothers and sisters across the world - in Cuba, in the Philippines, in Puerto Rico, in Samoa and Guam, and more - under the yoke of American oppression and expansionism. The nation that took on as its founding mantra that high aspiration, a city upon a hill, the very model of Christian charity and generosity, has now lost itself in the imperialism that has soiled so much of the globe. Long have the Mexican people known friendship and good relations with the United States - yet we cannot in good conscience allow a friend to make such dire mistakes.

American soldiers stormed into Havana, Manila, and a hundred other cities, brandishing their flag and proclaiming it a symbol of liberty, and freedom from colonial domination - a struggle all American nations know well. Yet the eyes of so many of us were obscured. We did not see that their star-spangled banner flew, not from a flag pole, but from a rifle - and with their bayonet they have driven cruel metal into the hearts of the libertation movements they begat themselves. The once proud republics that America raised up in model of her own great nation have been suppressed by the voices of ambition and vice.

The people of the Americas cannot help but wonder - has America so soon forgot her colonial oppression? Is the memory of the blood shed in the fight for liberty, equality, and opportunity so faded in their memory that they will allow their nation to become yet another imperial state? The Americans have proclaimed themselves unilateral guardians of the Americas from European interventionism. Now we people of the Americas must ask ourselves - who will protect us from them?

The Mexican government calls on all peoples of the Americas - including those within the United States herself, who are surely allies to all free peoples - to unite in solidarity in this endeavour.

The United States is very displeased to hear of Mexico's dreadful accusations of oppression. But then again Mexico seems to think itself above reproach given it's has a leader in the past who has called himself the "Napoleon of the west." Thankfully none such nonsense is present now but if you feel yourself so threatened by the United States may we ask what it is you feel threatened by?

We urge the United States government to view our comments as the respectful reproach of a friend - for the entirety of Latin America would ask that they do not approach this tense and difficult subject with a mind to confrontation. Speak not of long-dead generals and a time of war between the United States and Mexico - such is troubling talk of the very nature the free republics of America fear.

We have excluded European imperialism from this hemisphere. Let us not invite or codone Anglo-American imperialism in its place, clothed in the garb of liberty. The Americas belong to all Americans - and they should be guaranteed protection from threat and destruction, wherever its source may be. The refugees from Cuba who now fill the ports all around the Gulf of Mexico stand testament to the fact that the United States has forgotten herself, and her duty to her neighbours and friends.

We still do not see what you fear. We hear lectures from a country about who we are from a nation built from the ashes of Spain.

Will the United States government so carelessly insult all free American republic thus? For from Tierra del Fuego to the Rio Grande River, this is a continent of nations rebuilt from the ashes of Spanish colonialism. Even your own country has its origins in escape from colonialism. Do you think yourselves of such superior moral quality to your neighbours and friends?

If the United States government cannot see the fears held in the hearts of the people of the Americas that their "Monroe Doctrine", upheld as protection from European tyranny, shall become the very tool of US tyranny on this continent, and that by its right the peoples of not only Cuba, or Puerto Rico, or the Philippines, but of this entire continent shall fall, violently, under the sway of Washington... then there is little I can teach you, señor.

Nonetheless, with one voice, the Americas urge you as friends - step back from the abyss.

The United States has made no such insults only asked your concerns. Which now you blatantly show. But in so doing insult us. The United States has no interest in conquest of the America's. But if you wish to hurl insults very well do not come expecting us to treat you as honored friends if you intend to decry us as evil.

The Republic of Chile expresses concern at the recent rhetoric and actions of the United States of America. There is no need to insult the nation of Mexico or continue your colonial actions in the Caribbean or elsewhere.

With respect to the nation of Chile the US has made no insults to the Mexican government merely asked them to voice their concerns that we might address them. If this is an insult we must then question how are we to assuage the fears of others if we may not even ask them what it is they worry over.

Degrading and disregarding our just complaints and concerns with talk of Presidents past, and colonial oppression we threw off with great struggle and turmoil? You must forgive us if we perceive such comments as anything but insulting, sir. A diplomat should comport themselves with civility and common courtesy in questioning the cause of such fears as now grip all of Latin America - not dismiss such fears as the talk of lesser nations.

US actions in the Caribbean, and more distant but equally concerning in the Pacific, would not have been the first time that attempts have been made to extend the Anglo-American "manifest destiny" policy across the continent. That the US would brush off such invasions and colonising acts with nary a look backwards speaks to the fears in our hearts of a new tyranny on this continent - that of the friend turn malevolent. We urge restraint, consideration, and deliberation on this issue.
