In Banner Saga: As the Crow Flies, you play as part of a larger collective, a refugee caravan, a clan on the run. But you are also an individual.
Each player chooses a name, a race, and a subclass. These will mainly affect fighting style, and in some cases special skills and knowledge of lore. (Names should be Norse-inspired, but need not be historical names at all. See this list for inspiration if you need it.)

Varl Classes
____
Warrior
The Warrior is a giant that has focused his skills on offensive power, attacking his foes with force. The Varl were bred to fight, and they fight hard."Are there any amongst us not made to fight and kill?" asked the younger Varl. "Did Men and Dredge not run in fear just at the sight of us?" His elder chuckled. "Maybe, pup, but I will not call you a warrior until you have crushed someone so thoroughly that his friends feel the impact."
Subclasses
Warhawk - Carries a claymore, which he swings as nimbly across the battlefield as a farmer does his scythe.
Warleader - Carries a two-handed hammer, inspiring his fighters in combat through extensive experience.
Warmaster - Carries a two-handed axe, the sundering impact of which can break any armour.
Shieldbanger
The Shieldbanger is a giant that his focused his skills on defensive power, holding off the assaults of his foes. A stalwart shield in the face of danger. When the Dredge first arose and swarmed across the land like a black-armoured plague, it soon became known that the sound of beating wooden shields in the distance either meant salvation, or an early death, depending on which side of the line you stood.
Subclasses
Provoker - Carries a spiked club and a shield, taunting and cursing his enemies along the way to distract them.
Shieldmaster - Carries a mace and a shield, smashing through any armour before him no matter how thick.

Others
Some among the Varl have more special backgrounds than other.

____
Raiders
The Raider is a human fighter, of any fitting background - mercenary, soldier, militiaman, bandit, peasant turned warrior. While lacking the size of the Varl, they have mobility and ingenuity.Stop crying. You'll have to make the decision soon, boy. Become a farmer or fisher; hard tedious labour for certain, but you'll never go hungry. Become a trader, maybe live in wealth when you've mastered the art of lying. Become a builder or a smith, and make the things that will bring others glory. Or carry this axe in your hand, and this shield in the other, and take what those lesser men have made for you."
Subclasses
Backbiter - Carries a sword and a shield, darting quickly across the battlefield to deliver blow after blow from behind.
Raidmaster - Carries an axe and a shield, trained to hold on to his position and never back down from a threat.
Spearman - Carries a spear, utilizing the length and speed - and sharp point - of the weapon to great impact.
Archer
The Archer, a role to which human women are often (but not always) relegated, excels at ranged combat. Hailing from the same backgrounds as the Raider, these fighters are no less skilled than they are.Women were not accepted for a long time when it came to joining in battle. In fact, it is fair to say they were never accepted. Those women you see in war are only there because the men who protested are now lying beneath a pile of loose stones and soil, feathered with hand-made arrows.
Subclasses
Bowmaster - Carries a longbow, trained to strike accurately at even the greatest of distances.
Siege Archer - Carries a crossbow, capable of striking through armour no matter of thick.
Skystriker - Carries a shortbow, ambushing the enemy with speed and mobility.
Others
Certain individuals in the caravan are of very specialized backgrounds, and have very specialized skills. None of these are as skilled in combat as the combat-specialized classes, but have unique abilities. They will often have unique insights or knowledge of lore not accessible to others, too.
Only one of each specialized subclass will be allowed in the game, so be quick in choosing.
