"We and you ought not to pull on the ends of a rope which you have tied the knots of war. Because the more the two of us pull, the tighter the knot will be tied. And then it will be necessary to cut that knot, and what that would mean is not for me to explain to you." - Nikita Khrushchev (1961)

United Nations

Post by Huojin »

The United Nations is the foremost international organisation to promote cooperation and maintain international peace. The two primary organs of the UN modelled in this game are the General Assembly and the Security Council.

General Assembly

Composed of all United Nations members, the General Assembly (UNGA) is the main deliberative assembly for the discussion of crises and ongoing events around the world. The General Assembly votes on issues including recommendations to the Security Council, condemnations, admitting/suspending/expelling members, and so on. Although the decisions of the UNGA are non-binding on member states, they carry considerable political weight.

Security Council

Charged with maintaining international peace and security, the Security Council (UNSC) has the power to pass binding resolutions that effect member states - including establishing peacekeeping operations, applying sanctions, authorising military action, and so on.

Although in reality composed of 15 members (including 10 rotating non-permanent members), for the purposes of this game only the five Permanent Members will be considered as having voting powers on UNSC resolutions. At present they are the United States of America, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the French Republic and the Republic of China.

Non-member Nations

As of L1970, the following states are not members of the United Nations:

People's Republic of China, Bhutan, West Germany (observer), East Germany, North Vietnam, South Vietnam (observer), Rhodesia, Liechtenstein, North Korea, South Korea (observer), San Marino, Monaco (observer), Andorra, Switzerland (observer), Vatican City (observer).
