Republic of Cuba

Comrades of the General Assembly,

The delegation of the Republic of Cuba comes before this assembly to bring the attention of this council towards a very urgent matter: The blatant abuses and human rights violations carried out by the Portuguese Republic in their African colonies. Following the end of the Second World War and the establishment of the United Nations, all the members of this fair organization signed and accepted the Charter of the United Nations which, according to Chapter XI, Articles 73 and 74, vows to end the colonial system and rightly award the right of self-governance to all peoples currently oppressed by the evil powers of Imperialism. The process has been slow, but significant advancements have been made across the world. However, contrary to the founding beliefs of this organization, the Republic of Portugal has not only blatantly ignored the Charter of the United Nations but further intensified their grip of power over their oppressed African vassals, oppressing them with an Iron fist. Thus, the Republic of Cuba presents the following Resolution to the General Assembly:
United Nations General Assembly Resolution on the Portuguese Republic

The General Assembly,

Deeply concerned with the violent situation developing in the Portuguese Colonies in Africa,

Convinced that the Portuguese Republic has purposefully refused to uphold Chapter XI, Articles 73 and 74 of the United Nations Charter,

Emphasizing the need and right to self-determination owed to the peoples of Africa,

1. Affirms the pledge made in the United Nations Charter, Chapter XI, Articles 73 and 74, to develop self-government to all peoples of the world.

2. Strongly condemns the Portuguese Republic for its refusal to engage in the process of decolonization

3. Deplores the countless acts of violence and human rights abuses carried out by Portuguese Troops and local Colonial officials against the native residents of each respective colony.

4. Calls upon the Security Council of the United Nations to continue to persecute Portugal for their unlawful actions, employing Commercial and/or Diplomatic sanctions to do so.

5. Recommends that other members of this body issue sanctions of their own as a protest to the actions carried out by the Portuguese Republic in its African colonies.

6. Congratulates the locals who have, against all odds, remained staunchly committed to the fight against Colonialism and Oppression in their respective territories.

The consistent and persistent attempts of Portugal to hold onto their oppressive and backwards system of colonialism and imperialism at the expense of the peoples of Africa is deplorable. The USSR offers its full support to those under such oppression, and therefore votes YES on this resolution.

Syrian Arab Republic

The African struggle against colonialism is the same struggle that is being fought in the jungles of Vietnam, the same battles waged by the noble fedayeen on the streets of occupied Palestine, and the same cause which brought on the murder of Che Guevara. The Syrian people salute the Cuban initiative as just and necessary, and vote yes. God willing, today we have struck a blow against the evils of imperialism and reaction.

Yes. India knows all too well the horrors of colonialism, and it is a crime that Portugal continues to hold onto the African people's as if they were trinkets and baubles to be collected. This motion has our fullest support, and we urge the Portuguese government to immediately cease its continued efforts to keep its Ill-gotten empire.

République démocratique du Congo

Given the horrific acts of barbarity committed by the Portuguese colonial troops against the Angolan people, the free peoples of this world must unite against these Goths and Huns of the modern world. The DRC votes IN FAVOUR of this resolution. We further would call for investigation and sanction on the Portuguese imperialists for their use of chemical defoliants and herbicides on agricultural areas, reportedly including dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, trichlorophenoxyacetic acid, cocadylic acid, and Picloram being used on the harvest in liberated areas last year.
