Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons
- For the purposes of this Treaty, a nuclear-weapon State (NNWS) is one which has manufactured and exploded a nuclear weapon or other nuclear explosive device prior to January 1, 1967.
- Each NWS agrees to not "transfer, to any recipient, nuclear weapons, or other nuclear explosive devices, and not to assist any non-nuclear weapon state to manufacture or acquire such weapons or devices."
- Similarly, Non-Nuclear Weapons States (NNWS) agrees to not pursue or acquire nuclear weapons.
- All NWS make a firm committment to work towards disarmament and the shared goal of a world without nuclear weapons.
- NWS agree to help NNWS develop nuclear technology but only for peaceful purposes.
- NNWS agree to submit themselves to the safeguards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to make sure that they only develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
