Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons

Basic Overview:

• For the purposes of this Treaty, a nuclear-weapon State (NNWS) is one which has manufactured and exploded a nuclear weapon or other nuclear explosive device prior to January 1, 1967.
• Each NWS agrees to not "transfer, to any recipient, nuclear weapons, or other nuclear explosive devices, and not to assist any non-nuclear weapon state to manufacture or acquire such weapons or devices."
• Similarly, Non-Nuclear Weapons States (NNWS) agrees to not pursue or acquire nuclear weapons.
• All NWS make a firm committment to work towards disarmament and the shared goal of a world without nuclear weapons.
• NWS agree to help NNWS develop nuclear technology but only for peaceful purposes.
• NNWS agree to submit themselves to the safeguards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to make sure that they only develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

Syrian Arab Republic

The foremost concern of the Syrian government is the security of the Arab people, who have existed in a state of war since the British-backed invasion of our lands for over two decades, and we do not believe in limiting the capabilities of the Syrian Arab Army to defend our homeland against rogue states. However, we do not hesitate to support this document, despite our expectation that enemies of the Arab world have both the willingness and desire to wield the horrible brainchild of Einstein and Oppenheimer against our people. Even in defense, the use of nuclear weapons is a thought that should, to any reasonable nation, inspire nothing but revulsion, for it is a weapon whose efficacy is rooted in the mass killing of civilians. We who have borne wretched witness the mass displacement, internment, and outright massacre of Arab lives will therefore ratify this treaty, and urge our brothers within the Arab Commonwealth and the League of Arab States to do likewise.

The Republic of Korea in light of the situation in our region do not beleive this provides for adquate proection for it's people from nuclear ready states.

Libyan Arab Republic

We must remind the world, apparently, that this is already a well-established treaty.

The USSR signed it on 1 July 1968 and ratified it on 5 March 1970.

Although we understand the objections of the Syrians, and advocate fully for them, it's our understanding that Syria also signed it on 1 July 1968, and ratified it on 24 September 1969.

South Korea have yet to ratify it, but did indeed also sign on 1 July 1968, so your objections are extremely moot.

The US has signed and ratified this treaty, and urge the rest of the world to do the same. The destruction that is to be wrought from nuclear weapons is something we should all seek to eliminate as a possibility of war.
