Secretary-General, António Guterres, approaches the floor:
"Ladies and gentlemen. It is time that we discuss the non-self-governing territories of the world that seek independence. France has agreed to Mayotte independence but has shown support of a "No" vote in New Caledonia and French Polynesia. Meanwhile, Denmark's government has refused to allow an independence vote in Greenland. The UN will send observers to ensure a free election in the French territories and encourage a vote in Greenland. The floor is open to discussion and support for the measure to encourage an independence vote in Greenland."
