"Since, in the long run, every planetary society will be endangered by impacts from space, every surviving civilization is obliged to become spacefaring--not because of exploratory or romantic zeal, but for the most practical reason imaginable: staying alive." - Carl Sagan, 1994.

Gaulle addresses Posadist Crisis

With the arrival of alien life on Earth, the nations of the world have been faced with a new challenge to their hegemony and perhaps their way of life. The aliens have proven themselves not to come as peaceful explorers, like science fiction would tell us, but instead as agents of change, acting on behalf of an already present ideology that threatens to now cast the world towards an apocalyptic conflict. Though some may consider this hyperbole, others in the French government such as President Charles de Gaulle, have considered the tenets of the tenets of Posadism, and are preparing to meet the challenge.

In the first official act in response to the crisis, funding for the Centre national d'études spatiales (CNES) has been increased to better handle the burgeoning interest in outer space affairs. Collaboration with the military has also increased, though exact details as to the nature of this cooperation are currently classified.

On the international stage the President voiced his support for those countries currently under siege by Posadist forces, while taking a leadership role in coordinating an international response to the crisis. He espoused the need for unity of action without sacrificing national freedoms to the superpowers of the world, an act he hopes will spur the French return to strength on the international stage.

Whether he succeeds, whether the world can put a halt to this growing tide of radical sentiment, only time will tell

Student protesters in the early days of the May Revolt
France is a nation in crisis.

In what is being called the May Revolt, students began protesting after a series of arguments between the body and th administration of the Paris University at Nanterre. Teaming up with radical and socialist elements, what began as protests rapidly escalated into a series of full on protests. The streets of Paris were paralyzed as workers joined in, motivated by sympathy for the students cause as the dissent caused by the alien arrival in Argentina.

What followed was nights of violence as the protests descended into riots and looting, Streets were blockaded as buildings were torched, and emergency services found themselves overwhelmed. In the aftermath government forces were force to withdrew, where they now maintain a cordon around the city of Paris. Paris itself has been fully occupied by the 'Parisian Heavenly Republic', as the leaders of this so called movement have named it.

So far there has been no major loss of life, but things are tense as tanks and armed soldiers face down impromptu barricades. Everyone knows that the peace will not last. The only question is how long it will take.

For his part President de Gaulle has invoked Article 36 of the French Constitution to declare a 'State of Siege' in France as a result of the armed uprising. Civil liberties have been curtailed, and the Army has begun cooperating with the Police to arrest and jail potential dissidents who could ferment similar uprisings in other cities in France. He has refused to say what he will do regarding the situation, but that 'all options are on the table. France is in jeopardy, and those who do not stand with her will find no safety."

Meanwhile, rumors are swirling of floating lights seen over Paris, similar to those in Africa and South America. Will Paris be th front line of an extraterrestrial invasion of Europe? Only time will tell.
