Allow me to present a very simple bill. It does, in fact, explain itself.

Day of Tiradentes Federal Holiday Bill

Whereas the revolutionary martyr Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, commonly known as "Tiradentes", has been hailed as a national hero of the Republic since the 19th century,

Whereas said revolutionary martyr was unlawfully executed on 21 April 1792, a day dear to many Brazilians,

  • Section 1. The 21st day of April shall annually be celebrated the Dia de Tiradentes, and shall be a paid federal holiday.
  • Section 2. This bill shall go into effect thirty-one (31) days after passage.

This proposed bill has my approval. Regardless of ideology, we must acknowledge our heritage and celebrate the sacrifices made in the struggle for independence

We also find this to be a good testament to our heritage. May our children's childrens remember the glorious men who gave us our freedom.

We thank His Excellency the President and our Social Democratic comrades for their support.

Perhaps, given the clear bipartisan support for this, we could move this bill into the voting stage?

While not too enthusiastic about making the day paid, ultimately that is a small sacrifice to honour the great sacrifice of this hero. Let us forever honour his memory and never forget the men like himself who laid the foundations for a free, democratic Brazil.

The Liberal Democratic Party (91) will vote yes.
