NAME: Republic of Florence

Image

Ideology: Oligarchic-Republicanism, Financial-oriented

Government Structure: A head of state is elected among those wealthy and privileged enough to vote

National Leader: Statesman Leandro Lanzi

Author for this Nation: Orago

Domestic Power Sources:
  • Privileged Elite (Mediocre power, they like the fact they can afford to vote, they like the fact only they can vote, they like their sinecure honorary corrupt offices, they support the Statesman. Highly supportive of the military and have the loyalty of the military)
  • Democratic-Socialists: (Somewhat high amounts of power and support, growing. They support the expansion of voting rights in the republic, and the removal of the corrupt elite in office. Non-radical leftists, but may radicalize if unhappy enough)
  • Florence Communists (Somewhat low amounts of power, but slowly and steadily increasing. Radical leftists seeking a communist state and the seizure of the Statesman and elites' wealth.)
  • Caribbean Separatists (Mediocre power, growing steadily. want to form a republic out of the Florence West-Indies colonies. Favors no particular ideology, just want a better life)
  • Sardinian Separatists (Somewhat low amounts of power, growing steadily. Over the years, Sardinia has become the rural backyard for Florence. Not much investment is made into Sardinia infrastructure or the well being of Sardinia. Slightly pro-French and slightly pro-Sicilian stance.
International Allies:

None, main trade partner is Spain.

International Antagonists:
  • Two Sicilies: (Border disputes)
  • Holy See: (Border Disputes)
  • Venice: (Border disputes)
  • Caribbean colonial nations. Cuba?: (They have colonies near our sphere!)
  • France: (Sardinia will look nice in blue next to Corsica)
Military: An above average, European-grade military with ample supplies. They domestically produce small arms as well as the heavy stuff like tanks and to some degree, aircraft. They possess a navy that is smaller but more technologically up to date compared to Two Sicilies. They lack military tradition and experience, though.

Specific Technologies: Florence has always been a wise choice for banking for those wanting an alternative from Venice. This banking prowess has brought great wealth to the nation, allowing them to accomplish great works of architecture and infrastructure, and also bought them their West Indies colonial possessions. In an attempt to one up the Venetians, Florence engineers have devised an electro-mechanical computing system to allow the purchase and sale of stocks on their stock market via telegraph. While this technology is in its infancy and isn't used very much, it is surely the world's first automated electrical trading system.

Defences: Wealth has bought extensive fortifications along both the Sicilian and Venetian border.

Economy: Since the beginning of the early modern era, the Republic of Florence has been known for its banking and financial institutions for those not on good terms with Venice. This has brought extravagant wealth to the elite of Florence. This wealth has allowed Florence to industrialize quite nicely, and domestic factories produce all sorts of commodities and luxuries, supplied by resources in their West Indies plantations.

Conflicts and Issues: Caribbean separatism, social unrest, communist sentiment, Italian border tension, Sardinian neglect resentment

Oh yeah, make sure Florence is a Republic instead of a Kingdom. I think its marked as a kingdom on the map so far. Thank you.

Also, I don't see them on the map, but I hope its okay that Florence has a few colonial possessions. A few islands in the Caribbean that they purchased from some colonial power. Florence is not a colonial POWER like OTL France, Britain, Spain, etc. They just possess a few things like the Dutch or Danish

I also want to say that Spain is in a large amount of debt to Florence banking. I don't know, that would just add another cool dynamic.

If anyone wishes to discuss Florence, let me know!
