-AFRICA-
*A general election is held in Southern Rhodesia, the first since the Second World War. The United Party of Prime Minister Godfrey Huggins lost its overall majority but remained in power.
* Belgian colonial forces liberate a plantation that had been seized by local workers. When they colonial forces enter the main house they find the dead bodies of the owners along with several white neighbors. All workers at the plantation are executed.
*Doubting that the Belgian government in exile will be able to accomplish their intended goals of reestablishing control over Belgium and frustrated by the exploitative and one-sided relationship, the Belgian Congo declares itself autonomous of the government in exile. The colonial government states that local administrators, and not disconnected official in London have the knowledge to run the colony effectively. The Governor-General states that the colony will revert back to being the property of the King, while still being part of the Belgian empire. The Congo Free state has been established.
*With the Congo Free State being declared. The question of the fate of Ruanda-Urundi is now being pondered. Will it remain loyal to the Belgian Ministers, or will it side with the Free State and the King? Or will the new United Nations take an active role over the colony?

* The National Intelligence Authority and its operational arm the Central Intelligence Group are established in the United State
* In León, Mexico, federal troops, called in by the Governor of the State of Guanajuato, fire into a crowd of demonstrators, killing at least 40 people.
*Élie Lescot was overthrown as President of Haiti in a coup led by Colonel Paul Magloire, who then installed Franck Lavaud as the new President
*The United Steel Workers of America began a nationwide walkout, as 750,000 steelworkers ceased work at the nation's steel mills.
*NBC Radio commentator Drew Pearson breaks the news of what would become known as the "Gouzenko Affair": a Soviet spy ring has been operating in Canada, and that the spy agency GRU has been transmitting American atomic secrets from Ottawa to Moscow.
* In advance of the presidential election in Argentina, the U.S. State Department issues a 121-page "blue book", with evidence that Argentina, and candidate Juan Perón, had aided Nazi Germany during World War II. Perón wins the election in spite of the American publication.
*U.S. Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg of Michigan he asks the rhetorical question, "What is Russia up to now?" in a famous speech, and criticizes the Truman Administration's policy of appeasement toward the Soviets.
*Winston Churchill delivers his famous "Iron Curtain" speech at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri.
*British war hero Harold Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis, takes office as the 17th Governor General of Canada, serving until 1952
*The Cabinet Mission is dispatched to India by the British government. It seeks to create a united Indian after independence but must deal with the growing hostility between the Hindu and Muslim political leadership.
* The US has several major strikes including those by the Steelworkers Unions and the Railroad Unions. These strikes are resolved. The US votes to raise minimum wage.

* Japan's Emperor Hirohito surprises his subjects with the news that he was not descended from the Shinto Sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami, and that "The Emperor is not a living god". He addes that his people had to "proceed unflinchingly toward elimination of misguide practices of the past", including "the false conception that the Emperor is divine and that the Japanese people are superior to other races and fated to rule the world". The admission is published in newspapers throughout Japan.
*The United States Department of War announced a slowdown in demobilization of U.S. Army soldiers in the Pacific theater, cutting army discharges by 60 percent, from 800,000 down to 300,000 per month. In the week that followed, American soldiers around the world protested, in the Philippines, France, Guam, Germany, India and the United States. The War Department reverses the decision as a result of pressure from the "'Bring Em Home' Movemen
*General Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers (SCAP) during the occupation of Japan, begins a purge of the Japanese government, with the goal of removing "undesirable personnel" from office.
*The International Military Tribunal for the Far East, more commonly known as the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal, was created by proclamation of General Douglas MacArthur
*France resumes its protectorate relationship over Cambodia, following an agreement signed by King Norodom Sihanouk. Under the pact, France would manage all of Cambodia's foreign affairs and grant autonomy to the Cambodian people
*The Chinese civil war rages on between the communists and nationalists. The Communist have engaged in guerrilla actions to make up for their inferior numbers. There are rumors of Soviet support.
* The crew of the cargo ship USS Brevard rescued 4,296 Japanese civilians from the ship Enoshima Maru as it sank near Shanghai.
*First Indochina War: Chinese troops clash with Vietnamese rebels at Phong Thổ District in a skirmish. Tensions flare up about the purpose of the Chinese forces.
* French forces return to Vietnam. The military forces of France make a large scale assault to recapture the Bến Tre Province, which had been under control of the Viet Minh since August 25, 1945.
* The Vietminh hold elections in Vietnam, which are boycotted by other opposition parties. They establish a one party regime, which limited recognition.
*Ho Chi Minh, the so-called President of Vietnam and head of the insurgency, sends a telegram to U.S. President Harry S. Truman, asking that the United States use its influence to persuade France not to send occupation forces back into Vietnam, and to "interfere urgently in support of our independence". The USA doesn't respond.
*North Vietnam begins negotiating to return to the French community, but the negotiations quickly breakdown.
* Australian radar and television expert W.E. Osborne told an American audience that within fifty years, passenger travel to the Moon would be possible. Including stops at orbiting refuel stations, the trip would take ninety hours.
*The Royal Indian Navy Mutiny begins at the port of Colaba near Bombay. In the first mutiny in British India since 1857, a group of 1,600 sailors ("ratings") from the HMIS Talwar walked out of the mess hall because of inadequate food, and began to chant, "No food, no work". The next day, another 20,000 ratings in Bombay join the strike, and over the next days, rioting broke out. Order was restored on February 24, there were 223 deaths and 1,037 injuries.
*British Prime Minister Clement Attlee announces plans "to effect the transference of power to responsible India hands by a date not later than June 1948".
*Lt. Gen. Tomoyuki Yamashita, who led the Japanese conquest of Singapore and the Philippines, is executed by hanging in Manila for war crimes, followed by Lt. Col. Seichi Ohta, who had headed security for Japan's "thought police" (kempei tai), and interpreter Takuma Higashigi.
* Indonesia Tentara Republik Indonesia (Armed Forces of Republic Indonesia) or TRI evacuatedIndonesian citizens from the city of Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. In an operation called "bumihangus" or "scorched earth", TRI and over 200,000 civilians purposely burn their homes in an attempt to prevent incoming Allied forces and the Netherlands-Indies Civil Administration (NICA) from being able to easily set up an army base.
*The results of the first general election in India arecertified. Over a four-month period, voting is conducted for the Provincial Assemblies in each of the eleven provinces of British India. The Congress Party formed the majority in the legislatures for Bombay, Madras, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, the Central Provinces, Orissa, Assam and the North West Frontier; while the Muslim League won power in Bengal and the Sind. In Punjab, a coalition of Unionists, Congress and Sikhs formed a ministry
*The United Kingdom makes Singapore a Crown colony
*Lt.Gen. Masaharu Homma, Japanese general who ordered the Bataan death march, is executed in Manila by a U.S. Army firing squad. Additionally Captain Hoshijima Susumu, Japanese commander of the Sandakan prisoner-of-war camp in Indonesia, is hung for war crimes.
* Qin Bangxian, 39, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China 1932–35, Ye Ting, Bo Gu, Deng Fa and others die in a plane crash while en route from Chongqing to Yan'an
*In Japan's first multiparty election since 1932, women were allowed to vote for the first time as 2,770 candidates vied for 464 seats in the House of Representatives of Japan.
* Large scale protests against the USA breakout in Tokyo. American soldiers disprese the crowd.
*International Military Tribunal for the Far East: Former Japanese Prime Ministers Hideki Tojo (1941–44), Kiichiro Hiranuma (1939), Koki Hirota (1936–37) and Kuniaki Koiso (1944–45), and 24 co-defendants are indicted in Tokyo for war crimes
*Thailand is invaded at dawn by 800 soldiers of the French Army, who crossed the Mekong River from Laos, at that time part of French Indo-China. The troops from France were supported by planes and artillery, and clashed with local forces while pursuing Communist rebels.
*In Vietnam, the French colonial government creates an administration for the minority Montagnard population, separate from the Vietnamese people, with the headquarters at Buôn Ma Thuột.
*Ananda Mahidol, the 20-year-old King of Thailand,is found in his bedroom dead, from a single gunshot to his forehead, and with his Colt .45 pistol next to him.
* The United States carries out a nuclear test at Bikini Atoll. Representatives from other nations and members of the press are allowed to observe.
-EUROPE-
* Mania of the Masses: Across Europe Communist and Leftists newspapers report impromptu celebrations among the workers. Laborers ranging from factory workers to fieldhands join together and sing "The International" and other local labour songs. This joy is met by local proclamations that the victory of the Proletariat in the class struggle is at hand.
*Refugees and exiles continue to their homes, in what is perhaps the largest movement of humans in world history. Some return to rubble, others return to find that new people have claimed their home as their own. Houses and businesses owned by Germans or collaborators are seized, either by mobs or local governments. Looting is rampant.
*Europe's economy is decimated. Many factories were targeted by allied bombings or hit in attacks. Questions of ownership of property abound. Some factories lay abandoned as supply lines and the local economy have broken down. In a few areas worker's councils have seized control and in others the communist party.
*Many people have lost almost all their possessions and livelihoods. They are dependent on governments, charities, churches, and political organization for basic supplies.
*Enver Hoxha declares the People's Republic of Albania, with himself as prime minister
* Yugoslavia's new constitution, modeling the Soviet Union, establishes 6 constituent republics (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia). This is despite Western occupation of Macedon.
*Poland nationalizes its main industries, with passage of a law on "Taking public ownership of the basic branches of the national economy"
* Massacre of Amboise. In the village of Amboise 20 members of the Communist Party are rounded up and executed by members of the Ceux de la Libération paramilitary group. Their bodies are left in the town square covered in a white cloth. Upon that cloth is written the words, Collaborateurs.
* Five American troops are killed while out on Patrol near Lyon. The US government blames Communist insurgents while the mayor of Lyon blames the attack on socialist militia.
*Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi German architect of the Final Solution, escapes from the Soviet detention camp in Oberdachstetten, where he had eluded detection under the alias of "SS Lt. Otto Eckmann".
*László Bárdossy, who had served as Prime Minister of Hungary in 1941 and 1942, and later collaborated with the Nazis during the German occupation of Hungary, was executed by hanging in Budapest
* Pictures surface of emaciated Dutch Children begging for food in the streets of Amsterdam. The local communist party claims these photos are Fascist propaganda and that while the Netherlands had experience hard times in recent years food was growing more plentiful.
* The expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia begins as hundreds of Sudetenland residents are loaded onto trains at Mariánské Lázně.
* Despite a public outcry, Sweden begins the deportation of refugees from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia back to the Soviet Union.
*Friedrich Jeckeln, 51, SS commander during the Nazi occupation of the Soviet Union, was hanged in public at Pobeda Square in Riga, along with five of his officers.
*The first scheduled Trans-Atlantic commercial airplane flight was made when the "Star of Marseille", a TWA Constellation, took off at 2:21 pm from New York's La Guardia airport. The plane landed in Marseille 14 hours and 48 minutes later.
* Hungary was proclaimed a Republic under a new constitution that formally abolished the monarchy
* Reports surface of a mass execution of German refugees in Belgian territory. Several Germans who fled to London claim that armed men had descended upon their encampment and opened fire. An allied intelligent operative gives an anonymous interview to a British newspaper arguing that such killings are commonplace across Europe.
*Soviet leader Joseph Stalin addresses a national radio audience in his first major public speech after the end of World War II. Stalin said that another war was inevitable because of the "capitalist development of the world economy", and that the USSR would need to concentrate on national defense in advance of a war with the Western nations
*"The Long Telegram" is sent from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow to the U.S. Department of State. At more than 8,000 words, it is the longest telegraphed message ever sent. The author, George F. Kennan, the chargé d'affaires at the American embassy, was responding to a specific inquiry from the State Department, and his answer is the containment strategy, to keep the Soviet Union from spreading Communism further without going to war.
*The Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands (SED) is started in the Soviet Occupied Germany, when the Social Democratic Party is pressured to unite with the Communist Party.
*The Soviet Union and the French Commune join in asking the Spanish people to depose dictator Francisco Franco, based on the Generalissimo's August 15, 1940, letter to Benito Mussolini. Franco had offered support of the Axis Powers, and signed a secret protocol with Germany on February 10, 1943.
*Rudolf Höss, the Nazi Commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp, is located and arrested by Soviet military police near the northern German town of Flensburg, where he had been working on a farm under the alias "Franz Lang".
*General Draža Mihailović, Chetnik leader who oversaw the massacre of Bosnians and Croatians during the Nazi occupation of Yugoslavia, is captured in a mountain cave near Višegrad after two years in hiding.
*The Red Army makes its first successful launch of an Soviet-built rocket out of the atmosphere, using a combination of Soviet and German scientists in adapting the German V-2 rockets seized after the Communist victory in World War II. The Army rocket reaches an altitude of about 50 miles
* Soviet Forces continue mass round up of Nazi activists and collaborators across its territory. Several governments in exile protest that the Communist are also arresting loyalists.
* Greek legislative election, 1946: Under the supervision of Allied observers, the first elections in Greece since 1936 take place. The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) refuses to participate, and a coalition led by the People's Party won 206 of the 354 seats available. Konstantinos Tsaldaris becomes Prime Minister of the new governmen
* An article, on the front page of the Amsterdam newspaper Het Parool, brings the attention of publishers to the existence of a diary, written by a teenage girl who had died in a Nazi captivity. Readers are soon treated to the Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Revolutionary, the story of a young communist girl who has to hide from Nazi police and local dutch collaborators.
*King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy abdicates, and was succeeded by his son Umberto II
* Italy becomes a republic as the monarchy is abolished. The Christian Democrat party wins the election and forms a coalitions government with the Socialist and Communist Parties.
*In the first democratic elections since World War II in Czechoslovakia, the Communist Party, led by Klement Gottwald captures 114 of the 300 seats in Parliament.
*Ion Antonescu, prime minister and "Conducator" (Leader) of Romania during World War II is executed after being found guilty of betraying the Romanian people to German occupiers.
* The Stockholm Conference takes place. Diplomats from China, the USSR, USA, and UK gather in Stockholm for a conference held by the Prime Minister of Sweden. Many see this conference as a last ditch effort to end hostilities between the major states. Items on the agenda include establishing a "United Nation" and ending territorial disputes and legitimacy battles across Europe.
*The Stockhold Conference leads to the establishment of the United Nations. The USSR, USA, UK, and Republic of China are established as the permanent members of the security council, which controls the peacekeeping functions of the organization. A general assembly of nations that participated in the war is established. This body can vote on motions that are mostly ceremonial. The option to expand the UNSC is open, but it requires a 2/3s major of the GA and the unanimous agreement of the UNSC.
* The allies agree to the persecution of war criminals from both the Japanese and German regimes. Likewise the allies agree to several trusteeships in Asia. In Europe the allies agree on general principals of cooperation.
-MIDDLE EAST-
*Qazi Muhammad declares the independent people's Republic of Mahabad at the Chahar Cheragh Square in the Kurdish city of Mahabad. He is the new president, Haji Baba Sheikh is the prime minister.
* In a policy of preventing Jewish immigration to Palestine, British authorities intercept the ship Enzo Sereni, with 915 refugees on board. The Zionist group Palmach retaliate three days later with the destruction of a British Coast Guard station.
*Fifteen Soviet armored brigades invaded Iran's Azerbaijan region, while additional brigades deployed along the borders of Turkey, Iraq and Bulgaria. The USA demands the Soviets withdraw and give an ultimatum.
*The United Kingdom and the Emirate of Transjordan sign the Treaty of London, giving Transjordan its independence while Britain while continue to maintain military bases in the country.
*Syria's independence from France is made complete with the withdrawal of the last occupying forces from that nation
*After the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry had unanimously recommended that up to 100,000 European Jews be allowed to immigrate to Palestine, British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin declares that the United Kingdom would reject the plan.Speaking at the annual conference of Britain's Labour Party, Bevin comments that the motive for American support for a Jewish state was "because they did not want too many of them in New York." Following the rejection of the proposal, Zionist leaders begin a campaign of violence against the British. This includes the "Night of the Bridges" when Haganah destroys 11 highways and railway bridges.

*A general election is held in Southern Rhodesia, the first since the Second World War. The United Party of Prime Minister Godfrey Huggins lost its overall majority but remained in power.
* Belgian colonial forces liberate a plantation that had been seized by local workers. When they colonial forces enter the main house they find the dead bodies of the owners along with several white neighbors. All workers at the plantation are executed.
*Doubting that the Belgian government in exile will be able to accomplish their intended goals of reestablishing control over Belgium and frustrated by the exploitative and one-sided relationship, the Belgian Congo declares itself autonomous of the government in exile. The colonial government states that local administrators, and not disconnected official in London have the knowledge to run the colony effectively. The Governor-General states that the colony will revert back to being the property of the King, while still being part of the Belgian empire. The Congo Free state has been established.
*With the Congo Free State being declared. The question of the fate of Ruanda-Urundi is now being pondered. Will it remain loyal to the Belgian Ministers, or will it side with the Free State and the King? Or will the new United Nations take an active role over the colony?

* In León, Mexico, federal troops, called in by the Governor of the State of Guanajuato, fire into a crowd of demonstrators, killing at least 40 people.
*Élie Lescot was overthrown as President of Haiti in a coup led by Colonel Paul Magloire, who then installed Franck Lavaud as the new President
*The United Steel Workers of America began a nationwide walkout, as 750,000 steelworkers ceased work at the nation's steel mills.
*NBC Radio commentator Drew Pearson breaks the news of what would become known as the "Gouzenko Affair": a Soviet spy ring has been operating in Canada, and that the spy agency GRU has been transmitting American atomic secrets from Ottawa to Moscow.

* Japan's Emperor Hirohito surprises his subjects with the news that he was not descended from the Shinto Sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami, and that "The Emperor is not a living god". He addes that his people had to "proceed unflinchingly toward elimination of misguide practices of the past", including "the false conception that the Emperor is divine and that the Japanese people are superior to other races and fated to rule the world". The admission is published in newspapers throughout Japan.
*The United States Department of War announced a slowdown in demobilization of U.S. Army soldiers in the Pacific theater, cutting army discharges by 60 percent, from 800,000 down to 300,000 per month. In the week that followed, American soldiers around the world protested, in the Philippines, France, Guam, Germany, India and the United States. *General Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers (SCAP) during the occupation of Japan, begins a purge of the Japanese government, with the goal of removing "undesirable personnel" from office.
*The International Military Tribunal for the Far East, more commonly known as the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal, was created by proclamation of General Douglas MacArthur
*France resumes its protectorate relationship over Cambodia, following an agreement signed by King Norodom Sihanouk. Under the pact, France would manage all of Cambodia's foreign affairs and grant autonomy to the Cambodian people
*The Chinese civil war rages on between the communists and nationalists. The Communist have engaged in guerrilla actions to make up for their inferior numbers. There are rumors of Soviet support.
* The crew of the cargo ship USS Brevard rescued 4,296 Japanese civilians from the ship Enoshima Maru as it sank near Shanghai.
*First Indochina War: Chinese troops clash with Vietnamese rebels at Phong Thổ District in a skirmish. Tensions flare up about the purpose of the Chinese forces.
* French forces return to Vietnam. The military forces of France make a large scale assault to recapture the Bến Tre Province, which had been under control of the Viet Minh since August 25, 1945.
* The Vietminh hold elections in Vietnam, which are boycotted by other opposition parties. They establish a one party regime, which limited recognition.
*Ho Chi Minh, the so-called President of Vietnam and head of the insurgency, sends a telegram to U.S. President Harry S. Truman, asking that the United States use its influence to persuade France not to send occupation forces back into Vietnam, and to "interfere urgently in support of our independence". The USA doesn't respond.
*North Vietnam begins negotiating to return to the French community, but the negotiations quickly breakdown.
* Australian radar and television expert W.E. Osborne told an American audience that within fifty years, passenger travel to the Moon would be possible. Including stops at orbiting refuel stations, the trip would take ninety hours.
*The Royal Indian Navy Mutiny begins at the port of Colaba near Bombay. In the first mutiny in British India since 1857, a group of 1,600 sailors ("ratings") from the HMIS Talwar walked out of the mess hall because of inadequate food, and began to chant, "No food, no work". The next day, another 20,000 ratings in Bombay join the strike, and over the next days, rioting broke out. Order was restored on February 24, there were 223 deaths and 1,037 injuries.
*British Prime Minister Clement Attlee announces plans "to effect the transference of power to responsible India hands by a date not later than June 1948".
*Lt. Gen. Tomoyuki Yamashita, who led the Japanese conquest of Singapore and the Philippines, is executed by hanging in Manila for war crimes, followed by Lt. Col. Seichi Ohta, who had headed security for Japan's "thought police" (kempei tai), and interpreter Takuma Higashigi.
* Indonesia Tentara Republik Indonesia (Armed Forces of Republic Indonesia) or TRI evacuatedIndonesian citizens from the city of Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. In an operation called "bumihangus" or "scorched earth", TRI and over 200,000 civilians purposely burn their homes in an attempt to prevent incoming Allied forces and the Netherlands-Indies Civil Administration (NICA) from being able to easily set up an army base.
*The results of the first general election in India arecertified. Over a four-month period, voting is conducted for the Provincial Assemblies in each of the eleven provinces of British India. The Congress Party formed the majority in the legislatures for Bombay, Madras, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, the Central Provinces, Orissa, Assam and the North West Frontier; while the Muslim League won power in Bengal and the Sind. *Lt.Gen. Masaharu Homma, Japanese general who ordered the Bataan death march, is executed in Manila by a U.S. Army firing squad. Additionally Captain Hoshijima Susumu, Japanese commander of the Sandakan prisoner-of-war camp in Indonesia, is hung for war crimes.
* Qin Bangxian, 39, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China 1932–35, Ye Ting, Bo Gu, Deng Fa and others die in a plane crash while en route from Chongqing to Yan'an
*In Japan's first multiparty election since 1932, women were allowed to vote for the first time as 2,770 candidates vied for 464 seats in the House of Representatives of Japan.

* The United States carries out a nuclear test at Bikini Atoll. Representatives from other nations and members of the press are allowed to observe.
-EUROPE-
* Mania of the Masses: Across Europe Communist and Leftists newspapers report impromptu celebrations among the workers. Laborers ranging from factory workers to fieldhands join together and sing "The International" and other local labour songs. This joy is met by local proclamations that the victory of the Proletariat in the class struggle is at hand.
*Refugees and exiles continue to their homes, in what is perhaps the largest movement of humans in world history. Some return to rubble, others return to find that new people have claimed their home as their own. Houses and businesses owned by Germans or collaborators are seized, either by mobs or local governments. Looting is rampant.
*Europe's economy is decimated. Many factories were targeted by allied bombings or hit in attacks. Questions of ownership of property abound. Some factories lay abandoned as supply lines and the local economy have broken down. In a few areas worker's councils have seized control and in others the communist party.
*Many people have lost almost all their possessions and livelihoods. They are dependent on governments, charities, churches, and political organization for basic supplies.
*Enver Hoxha declares the People's Republic of Albania, with himself as prime minister
* Yugoslavia's new constitution, modeling the Soviet Union, establishes 6 constituent republics (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia). This is despite Western occupation of Macedon.
*Poland nationalizes its main industries, with passage of a law on "Taking public ownership of the basic branches of the national economy"
* Massacre of Amboise. In the village of Amboise 20 members of the Communist Party are rounded up and executed by members of the Ceux de la Libération paramilitary group. Their bodies are left in the town square covered in a white cloth. Upon that cloth is written the words, Collaborateurs.
* Five American troops are killed while out on Patrol near Lyon. The US government blames Communist insurgents while the mayor of Lyon blames the attack on socialist militia.
*Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi German architect of the Final Solution, escapes from the Soviet detention camp in Oberdachstetten, where he had eluded detection under the alias of "SS Lt. Otto Eckmann".
*László Bárdossy, who had served as Prime Minister of Hungary in 1941 and 1942, and later collaborated with the Nazis during the German occupation of Hungary, was executed by hanging in Budapest
* Pictures surface of emaciated Dutch Children begging for food in the streets of Amsterdam. The local communist party claims these photos are Fascist propaganda and that while the Netherlands had experience hard times in recent years food was growing more plentiful.
* The expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia begins as hundreds of Sudetenland residents are loaded onto trains at Mariánské Lázně.
* Despite a public outcry, Sweden begins the deportation of refugees from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia back to the Soviet Union.
*Friedrich Jeckeln, 51, SS commander during the Nazi occupation of the Soviet Union, was hanged in public at Pobeda Square in Riga, along with five of his officers.
*The first scheduled Trans-Atlantic commercial airplane flight was made when the "Star of Marseille", a TWA Constellation, took off at 2:21 pm from New York's La Guardia airport. The plane landed in Marseille 14 hours and 48 minutes later.
* Hungary was proclaimed a Republic under a new constitution that formally abolished the monarchy
