Before I approve Qing, I'd want to chat to anyone about what they had in mind. If you have time to pop onto our IRC, or if not, send me a PM, it'd be appreciated.

... or you can take Portugal or Denmark-Norway or something like that without issue :3
I can be Denmark-Norway if that is needed more.
It'd certainly be handy to have, if you don't mind the slightly awkward position it's in. Although DutchGuy didn't tank the country during his brief stint in charge, so it'd be interesting to see what you could do with it.

Let me know what you decide and I'll send you a PM for whatever you choose.

This. Not as Denmark-Norway, at any rate.
I'll take it.

It's late here, so I probably won't be on just at the moment, but I'm on for long stretches during the day and am easy to catch. Or you can PM me, whatever's easiest for you.

Bomie has dropped out as the Netherlands - I now heartily encourage potential players to sign up as either the Netherlands or Portugal - two very interesting, influential, and possibility-filled nations.

Out of the list provided (and not!) I'd prefer one of the German states with my favourite unmentioned being Hesse-Darmstad and mentioned being the Electorate of Bavaria!

If you'd like you can make the case for playing as Hesse-Darmstad, and if it's convincing I'll approve it. Sending me a PM is fine if there's private details you'd rather not share, or you can post here if not. Otherwise I'll happily accept you as Bavaria.

When it comes to Portugal, would you happen to have any recommended reading for someone new to both period and country for an idea of what they're getting into?

Nothing specific, but I'd recommend reading about John V (Portugal's Sun King) and the re-entry of Portugal in European politics he led, Indian Ocean trade and activities in South East Asia, and the growth of Brazil.

If you need a hand finding things beyond Wikipedia, let me know and I'll lend a hand.
