First Contact
"Two possibilities exist: Either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying." - Arthur C. Clarke.
It happened on November 2nd 1967. The day of First Contact.
All Souls' Day too, actually. Not the quiet religious celebration that the Argentinian regime had in mind, when suddenly it appeared. The Flying Saucer. A megastructure of unimaginably complex design, turning the skies of Buenos Aires dark as it hovered above the capital city. Rioting quickly began, while the military debated giving fire. In Washington D.C. and Moscow, telephones rang wildly, and plans for the nuclear bombardment of Argentina were made.
They were halted soon. Through means unknown, addressing all world leaders, the extraterrestrials inside the Flying Saucer declared two things, using very simple but correctly and universally translated sentences:
One, they came in peace, from a distant and wonderful world.
Two, any attempt to attack their vessel would result in the "sterilisation" of the Earth. Make of that what you will.
Three, they had made new friends already. Humans weren't so bad after all. In English-speaking countries, the exact words used sent shivers down many a spine: They had found comrades.
Not long after, Argentina went dark.
Argentine Revolution
Barely anything is known of the Argentine Revolution yet.
The following has emerged, although much of it is merely allegations.
Sometime immediately after First Contact on 2 November 1967, a coup d'etat of some sort took place in Buenos Aires, accompanied by the sudden emergence of tens of thousands of revolutionary militants across the country, arriving by means unknown. Armed with highly exotic weaponry and armour, thought to be of alien design, they overwhelmed all military forces.
No word yet of casualties, resistance movements, or... well, anything. No one seems to be able to get into Argentina, or out of it.
The new self-declared government of the Argentine Republic appears to be headed by one J. Posadas, Supreme Leader of the Revolution and apparent pro-alien messiah. Having formed the perfect synthesis of Marxism-Leninism-Trotskyism and worshipping the new, so far unseen, aliens as the true vanguard of the revolution, his Partido Obrero Revolucionario – Posadista appear to be in complete and utter control, ruling with an iron fist.
Why are the aliens doing this? What do the Posadists want? How is all this happening? Did the obscure revolutionary reach out to the aliens and invite them onto this world, or did they contact him as a willing local collaborator? Who knows. So far no one has glimpsed the off-worlders and lived, and no one seems to know much about Posadas other than that his occultist-communist ideology favours a Third World revolution aided by communist UFOs, adores space exploration, maintains an interest in dolphin-human communication, and enjoys the thought of nuclear war. Weird shit.
World-Wide Tremors
As news of First Contact and the Argentine Revolution spreads across the world, during Christmas 1967, the world shakes in terror. Emergency meetings of the United Nations, the Organization of American States, NATO and the Warsaw Pact are called, and governments and politburos across the world are debating if the threat of immediate pulverisation is worth using this one last chance to nuke the aliens back to the Stone Age.
As the year turns, Posadist parties across Latin America are mushrooming, declaring armed struggle against their respective governments. As of yet, in the first days of 1968, there is no confirmation of anything, but international rumour has it that signs of revolutionary activity have been noted in Colombia (Posadist Trotskyist Workers Party), Brazil (Brazilian Section of the Trotskyist-Posadist IVth International), Chile (Revolutionary Workers' Party (Posadist)), Peru (Revolutionary Workers' Party) and Uruguay (Revolutionary Workers Party Trotskyist-Posadist). In Peru, a pro-Soviet military regime, martial law has been declared as a precaution, some student informants among the multitude of Mexican revolutionaries have indicated to the government that Posadists are afoot, and in the Republic of Cuba comrade Fidel Castro himself is thought by some to be shaking in his boots, and by others to be arming himself for a showdown. The leader of Latin American communism up to this point, Fidel - who once fought alongside Posadist guerrillas, before purging the Trotskyists from his island paradise - is viewed by the new Argentine leadership as a CIA operative, and the likely killer of his friend Che Guevara.
Across the Western World, the many minor and largely - until now - irrelevant Posadist groups haven't made any sign of militancy yet, but governments are alarmed. In fact, in the United States (Revolutionary Workers Party (Trotskyist-Posadist)), the United Kingdom (Revolutionary Workers' Party (Trotskyist)), France (Revolutionary Communist Party (Trotskyist)), Belgium (Revolutionary Worker's Party – Trotskyist), West Germany (Posadist Communist Party), Greece (Revolutionary Communist Party-Posadists), Italy (Revolutionary Communist Party (Trotskyist-Posadist)) and Spain (Revolutionary Worker's Party (Trotskyist-Posadist))... the various Posadists appear to have gone completely underground. Pro-alien slogans and flying saucer graffiti are spreading like a venereal rash across American and European urban centres and universities, but many wonder if it's the actual Posadists or sympathizing youths that are behind it.
In response to the sudden and likely extremely bloody extraterrestrial-revolutionary invasion and takeover of Argentina, former President Juan Perón has called together members of the Argentine diaspora to his place of exile in Spain, and declared a Provisional Salvation Government of Argentina. He is calling for the immediate liberation of his homeland, urging aid from the USA, the UK, France, the USSR and China. Hell, anyone.
In Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania, many are panicking - others are shrugging. While the East Bloc (and certain Asian) governments are facing an existential threat, the Third World has no such concerns. Alien overlords or American-European ones, what does it matter? Just more white tomfoolery. Some, perhaps, are eyeing a very profitable opportunity, though... Above all, everyone is waiting for new knowledge of what the fuck is going on.
On New Year's Eve, one final piece of news shocks the world. Bolivian revolutionaries, armed with exotic weaponry and chanting the battle cry "Con Che al cielo!" are pouring across the countryside. Survivors of the Ñancahuazú Guerrilla, revolting tin-miners, urban left-wing sympathizers and the Partido Obrero Revolucionario Trotskista Posadista have merged into an united front, commanded by Commandant Carlos Flores Bedregal. The right-wing military regime of Gen. René Barrientos is besieged at La Paz.
