Boredom and perseverance have allowed the mighty Huojin Space Exploration Agency to triumph over the lowly CWestfall Space Agency and achieve the first recorded visit to another world.

The mighty Angaraka I spacecraft. Named for one of the names of Mangala, Hindu astrological name for Mars, and meaning "one who is red in colour", this brave craft, with its nuclear engine, was launched into a 150km orbit of Kerbin by a hefty lift system before beginning its long voyage.
Image
After waiting a gazillion years (read: something like 100 days?) for a launch window, the target of our exploration, Duna, finally shifted into place and the course was laid in. And we lit that candle and rode it all the way to another effin' planet.

Image
Saying goodbye to Kerbin and the Mun. Seasoned KSP-ers will note that the ship is actually fairly small, and at the time I had no plans for returning this craft to Kerbin.
Image
On a fly-by of Minmus, Kerbin's second, estranged moon, on the way out of the Kerbin system.
Image
Having reached Kerbin escape velocity and finally broken free of the loving grasp of Kerbin's gravitation field and been grasped by Kerbol (the Sun), we look back to where Kerbin and co. are. The two bright-white dots above the top left solar panel are Kerbin and the Mun.
Image
Amongst the first sightings of Duna on approach, in the top left. Closing in further, you can see Ike, Duna's moon, as well, as a large-ish grey dot just between Duna and the top left solar panel.
Image
Our periapsis was something like 28 million metres from Duna's surface, so in order to slow ourselves from a Duna escape trajectory, we had to come to a virtual standstill at 27.7 m/s, which is less than 9 mph.
Image
Closing in for the first time and after some fiddling with orbits, we get some solid images of Duna and Ike.

The rocket still has plenty of fuel left. Probably enough to return to Kerbin if I wanted to. But I don't really have any plans for that. It can't land and take off again from Duna, because it's not built for that. If I weren't flying stock-only and had MapSat, I'd probably shift over and take a gander at Ike too, I had about three orbital interactions during my braking burn to get into Duna orbit before I finally got a close-ish orbit, so it doesn't seem too tricky to get to. Probably no harder than reaching the Mun from Kerbin, at any rate.

As it stands, I'll probably deorbit the rocket, decouple the capsule and hope the atmosphere is thick enough that my parachute slows us down enough that Jeb doesn't get smeared on the ground, and then he can jump out and plant the flag for Kerbals everywhere. Still need to pick an interesting-ish feature though. It'll probably require closer orbital passes, but I find myself probing carefully to make sure I don't hit the atmosphere, since I didn't want to look up any information on Duna.

I couldn't take that one lying down. Yeah I know my turn is late...

The mission involved 3 stages. The first two were pretty standard; Some solid boosters and mainsails to get into orbit, the second stage consisted of three normal liquid thrusters to escape Kerbin (Using the Mun as a slingshot), and as usual I didn't think to take any pictures during the bits that don't involve the landing.

Then, to get to Eve, I used a nuclear engine to get from an orbit near Kerbin down to Eve. Ended up having a tonne of fuel left over, though it still used at least 2900 delta-V. I wasn't counting. This was the first time I've ever really used those engines before, though. I quite like them.

The landing was super easy, though I was doing 4.5 km/s when I hit the atmosphere (Apoapsis was still about 65 000 000 metres) and I'm pretty sure that'll be a no-no once they implement re-entry heat effects. Here are some pictures after all engines have been decoupled.

Since he won't be going anywhere any time soon (Over 11 000 delta-v required just to get from surface to Eve orbit, not to mention lack of engines) the vessel was renamed the Eve Low-Altitude Research Base.

For anybody interested, today the game is 40% off on Steam, making now an excellent time to legitimately acquire it. (Of course any day is a good day to torrent it as I previously had in the past)

So, I already told Huojin about this, but I frickin' finally learned how to dock.

As this not at all staged photo shows, I managed to get one step closer to not sucking at KSP. This space station (Currently just a hab module and an RCS bank, and why yes those are Clamp-O-Tron Sr.™ docking ports) is my first tenuous step into a debris-free playthrough, where everything I launch is either returned to the ground or actually in use.

I feel it's worth mentioning that I now have 4 modules assembled in Low Kerbin Orbit, however my original goals are taking a beating. Not only have I run out of fuel on both of the upper stages that delivered the last 2 modules, and not only do they lack docking ports, but they also lack any form of control.

I suppose what I'm getting at here is that I am going to be shooting some space junk out of the sky in the near future. Both bits of debris are currently within 50 or so kilometres, but I don't expect that to hold long.

They'll drift away naturally if you let them. Or just send up a thing to explode them into smaller pieces, shure :P

Blow them up! Or build a catcher thing to bring the pieces back down to Kerbin.

So planning for the 0.21 release (imminent), CWest and I are doing another collab project, possibly involving a space station and a Mun-base. It will be using mods.

Just so we can keep track, these are the mods we're planning on using, though obviously 0.21-compatible versions don't exist yet:

MechJeb Autopilot - Mostly for instrumentation only, in the VAB and the Flight Scene. Using it to fly is less than ideal, pilot skills please.
ISA MapSat
RemoteTech
Kerbal Attachment System
SubAssembly Manager
Haystack
Kethane
Robotic Arms

To Be Decided

FusTek Station Parts - There may be new parts in 0.21? I guess we can wait and see if we still want this.
Docking Washers
Caterpillar Tracks
Radar Altitude and Vertical Speed Indicators

Anything else you want to add, CWest? Or anyone else who'd like to be involved? zenburg?

This man is a genius. There is no other word for it. Watch the whole thing. It's amazing. So much of this stuff never even occurred to me to do, or thought of as being possible in KSP, mods or not.

A letterbox of the Lunar Excursion Module from my pretty accurate Saturn V replica I've been playing about with in anticipation of the potential Space Race thingy with CWest. Mission Commander, Jebediah Kerman, stands next to the flag, with Lunar Module Pilot, Bill Kerman, next to him.
Image
It certainly looks the part, but I soon ran into the problem that my LEM Ascent Stage is pretty pants. Nowhere near enough delta-V to get me into orbit and rendezvous with the Command/Service Module. The Descent Stage could do it, even after landing, since it has a buttload of fuel and thrust to spare, but what's the point in making an accurate-ish stock Saturn V if your LEM doesn't leave its Descent Stage behind?

I reworked it with a bigger fuel tank, but it's so much taller and doesn't look as pretty and compact as that one, which is super bumming me out.

On the topic of the rest of the Saturn V, it's pretty good. The S-IC (first) stage has five engines and takes us to about 30km. If the ascent is good, sometimes there's a tiny bit of fuel left to help with the circularisation of the orbit, but mostly that's a job for the S-II (second) stage, which has, in my testing, anywhere between 426 and 577 units of liquid fuel left over. It's two tanks of different sizes stuck together, so if I can get a consistent ascent that's stable enough, I may be able to cut down on size.

The S-IVB works nicely. Trans-lunar injection burn goes very smoothly, generally there's fuel left on that too, but I don't want to cut down the size further. There's a little fiddling when you do the LEM docking, since you need two decouplers mirroring each other so they don't block the docking ports, but I fixed some sepatrons to them so they blast away when you jettison them, and docking is really easy.

The CSM has tons of fuel for the return to Kerbin. So really the only issue is the unsatisfactory LEM Ascent Stage. I haven't checked recently, but obviously because of differences between Earth and Kerbin and NASA and KSP, it doesn't lift anywhere near 120 tons to LEO like the actual Saturn V, it's more like 40+ at present, but the S-II stage is pretty efficient and has fuel to spare, so could probably take more, maybe 60 tons total? I'll test it out when it's finished. You could probably use it for Minmus missions too with no adjustments.
