There's some debate about the role of the Turkish military at the time, given that while they did not commit the initial massacre, it was said by contemporary newspaper reports like that one that the Turkish troops fired on the British troops when they tried to save the Christian civilians from being massacred. Similarly, there's argument over whether the Turkish government incited the massacre - either way, nobody comes out smelling of roses.
