State of the Church
We are the Rock of His Church. We stand upon hallowed foundations, and the Diocese of Rome - whether abroad or at home - shall be eternal.

SEDE VACANTE
Since the death of His Holiness Pope Pius VI, who died in French captivity on 29 August 1799, there is a state of SEDE VACANTE.

During this mournful interregnum, the Sacred College of Cardinals holds the regency of the State of the Church.

Since 30 November 1799, a Papal Conclave is being held at the San Giorgio Monastery in Venice, to select a new Bishop of Rome.
