Re: (CHAMBER) Union Registration Act

The government needs to officially recognise these unions and the unions need to organise themselves so that they are in a position of power to bring their concerns to the government. Brazil must look after it's own, and the government of Brazil must cooperate with the workers of Brazil in order to assure that legality and ethics meet. We condemn the attempts by the Communists to make the Brazilian unions subservient to the Soviet Union.

The National Liberal Alliance (70) will vote in favour.

Even if the insinuations made in this chamber that Brazilian unions currently answer to anyone besides Brazilian workers weren't borderline slander, and the assertion that a bill empowering the state to suppress unions for dissent and on the basis of ideology weren't an outright lie, we would love an explanation as to how the many anarchist and Trotskyist unions in Brazil would find themselves answering to the Soviet Union.

The Social Democratic Party (27) will vote AGAINST this bill.

We find that Unions need to be independent from political control to be effective as voices for the people. If we continue down this course--as we may just have--this will only lead to a new form of the Coronelismo in the workplace, as the rich use their wealth and power to manipulate workers and the workplace in ways that will only undermine the power of our solidarity as workers. This does already happen, but the rich are always the class with the most political control, so tell me, my colleagues, those of you who would say they stand for liberty and against tyranny, how is handing control of our worker's lives to their bosses promoting equality? How is it allowing workers increased freedom?

It is with our petty concerns that we most likely would sign away the very freedoms of man we came here to protect. So help us God.

As stated in the lower chamber, we take exception that this act likely will result in political suppression (as was surely the drafter's intent) and will be used invariably as a means by which bosses will seek to chain and curtail the worker strength that being in a union gives to the masses.

The SDP (3) votes Against this measure.
