Give me a name. If you would like assistance, let me know but https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_days ... h_Republic and http://zlimpkk.tripod.com/Genealogy/czechsurnames.html should provide some ideas. Noble names aren't so well preserved here, so please contact me with an idea (place / of nature / notable trait) and we can work a translation. Generally if you're a woman your name will be as a mans but end in -ová or -ková (it's a consonant thing) (eg Mr. Tesarik, Ms. Tesariková, Mr. Benda, Ms Bendová, yada yada). This is even done to foreign names, so even if you're Michelle Obama, you'll be Ms. Obamová in Achát-Kámen. BTW I picked a weird example. It would be Ms. Novotná... More example surnames - https://news.expats.cz/czech-culture/un ... -surnames/ http://www.radio.cz/en/section/letter/by

Unless otherwise specified or requested I'll provide you with your title(s) as appropriate.

Faction: Dům pane z Rušivých, the House of the Lords of Rušivých. An ancient house it is, with many different legends about the origins. They themselves would claim they were founded by a baseborn son of a long-dead King, while others might be inclined to point towards a shipwright overcome with both luck and wealth. Whether originally royals or burghers, the Lords z Rušivých have served as military commanders and civil servants of the City for centuries. Riverine ventures have been the heart of the family's wealth.

Leader: Julin z Rušivých, "Tusk". Once a famed duelist and quasi-adventurer, with a taste for bad pilsner and fine women, the diseased death of his uncle and cousins left him the last heir and lord, and forced to settle down. It had an harrowing effect on the formerly happy and charismatic man, who only in the last two years, after three decades of unhappy political marriages and dull family affairs has refound some love for life. Some would call it a mid-life crisis, his children certainly do. He is frequently seen reading like never before, or discussing with learned men: Engineering, brewing, economic development, and perhaps even less worldly things, are all topics at hand. The duelist's swagger isn't entirely gone, either. What has brought this about?

Faction: Honorable House of the Dubious Trade. In other words, the Thieves Guild - a collection of bastards (literal and figurative), cutthroats, extortionists, and footpads, distinguished only in the policy of their new guildmaster asking his subordinates to kindly not kill their marks. It's bad for business.

Leader: The Wondersmith, also known as Milan of Ponava, albeit very rarely and only within his earshot by those he respects. A silver-tongued charming man with pearly teeth, an educated accent (but coarse and presumably affected diction) and a debonair demeanor, the new Guildmaster of the Dubious Trade speaks little of the specifics of his origins, only willing to admit that his mother was an actress-turned-courtesan taken by consumption and his father remains an important figure in local politics, and that he could give a damn less about the latter fact - finding the nobility to be self-centered hypocrites whereas he is only the former. Apparently in his late 20s (he is fond of wearing theatrical masks in public, for obvious reasons), he has only been Guildmaster for two years, having dueled the previous leader over the honor of a woman he shared a platonic relationship. Indeed, it is these peculiarities that mark his strange reign from the poor districts - he is merciless, of course, but more lenient among the extortion rackets of the poor whereas inclined to vicious poetic justice when dealing with the wealthy who wrong the guild; his protection is extended to actresses, whores, and orphans in exchange for their service, which may or may not selfishly allow him a position as an information broker; and artists may soon find themselves with anonymous donations in exchange for the name of the Honorable House and the elusive Wondersmith being attached to their works.

Faction:
Universita. The Universita is an ancient and prestigious organisation, dedicated to the gathering and preservation of knowledge, both mundane and magical. Centuries ago, the Universita enjoyed its greatest period of growth, during the Time of the Towers, when different colleges and even some of the most senior academic magisters competed with one another to construct the tallest and most magnificent towers, topped with grand decorations, for their own glory, shining its reflection on the Universita as a whole. Fearing the consequences of this expansion and jockeying for position, the faculty voted to clamp down, setting a moratorium on any further construction or change, crystallising the venerable Universita as a snapshot in time. Its hallowed halls are steeped in heritage and custom, the dreaming spires of its many towers sagging - in the metaphorical sense - under the accumulated weight of thousands of years of tradition and several centuries of immutable rigidity. While the older members of the faculty cling to conventional wisdom, many of the younger minds of academia see the lifting of the old restrictions - and therefore change and reform in the Universita - as long overdue.

'Leader':
Rektor Hedvika Nováková, Rektor kolegia (Rector of the Colleges), Předsedkyně Výboru pro univerzitní správu (Chairwoman of the Committee for University Administration), čtenářem neviditelných spisů (Reader of Invisible Writings), Doktor transmutace (Doctor of Transmutation), Senior přednášející v evokaci (Senior Lecturer of Evocation), Člen Společenstva Akademie vykrájení (Fellowship Member of the Conjuration Academy), and formal post-holder of many other minor administrative positions within the Universita.

Hedvika, on the surface, is a not unremarkable, but certainly not flamboyant, middle-aged academic magistrix. She has diligently risen through the ranks of the Faculty through hard work and a keen, shrewd intellect. While there is no bar to a woman serving in any of the academic positions of the Universita, the traditional nature of the organisation - and that its senior echelons are almost entirely comprised of elderly, wealthy men concerned either solely with the minutiae of their research or with their own profit and self-aggrandisement - means that women have generally been required to work twice as hard and achieve twice as much as their male counterparts to achieve the same positions. The Archchancellor, a centenarian, bewhiskered man whose primary qualification is his age and his reputation for a groundbreaking thesis published more than half a century ago, is senile enough to barely know what is going on any longer, and is trotted out in a wheelchair for the city's formal social functions, surrounded by attendants who interpret his musings to his interlocutors.

Hedvika, however, turned this to her advantage, becoming far more knowledgeable about the workings of the Universita, and her many fields of magical study, than most - on top of her academic titles, acquiring for herself a slew of unglamourous and undesirable administrative positions for which there was little, if any, competition, delegating the daily grunt-work of most positions to a different assistant, and thereby accumulating an unprecedented degree of control over the institution, setting policy on such a large number of minor issues that they built up into a solid control over the Universita. Thanks to this, she now controls precisely half of the seats in the výboru pro univerzitní správu, and her position as Předsedkyně gives her the tie-breaking vote. While this means that the Rektor is now the de facto leader of the Universita, rather than the Archchancellor, this is not noticed by most people, even in the Faculty - as more often than not, she is the only attendee to the Committee's meetings, and for the time being, this is how she likes it.

Firefly wrote:A powerful, and old family, whom it is said in days of old fed the nation in times of war. Many say, Dům pane z Rušivých defends the nation in it's time of need, but Dům Volinski fills the bellies of those defenders.

Even today they hold huge amounts of land dedicated to cattle farming, and could feed a sizable part of the population alone. No noble's table is without a Volinski beef during banquets or entertaining. The extended family tends to spend most of it's time in their lavish country estates away from the squalor of the city but do maintain a manor there too.

The family motto is "Jeden národ pochoduje po břiše a my ho naplníme" (A nation marches on it's stomach, and we will fill it), but in private, behind closed doors, the family really believes that "Hladký člověk udělá cokoliv na jídlo, pokud ho živíš, ovládáš toho muže" (A hungry man will do anything for a meal, if you feed that man, you control that man).

Roman Volinski would be described by his peers as one of the most generous, charming, benevolent men, but only to his face. In reality Roman is a cruel master, many of his peers truly fear interacting with the man, whom cares little for those who cannot serve his own interests. Under Roman the family's serfs are treated like slaves and despite working them hard, he encourages them to have more children. Roman regularly inspects the family's estate and personally deals with insubordinate serfs, often seen smiling during lashings and punishments. He is said to be rather fond of the 'Hung, Drawn and Quartered' method for those whom would seek to attempt to rile up his human property.

Roman is ambitious in his goals, his expansion of his workforce is to further play the great game of increasing the families standing, but more important it's profits and control over the region. Roman practices the private family motto and truly believes the key to controlling the nation and bringing it under his control is through the supply of it's food. He is not above doing whatever that means to ensure his meat is the only meat on your plate.

Despite his cruelty he has a softer side for his beloved wife Adéla, a woman whom matches Roman's own cruelty and ambitions. The two are openly smitten with one another and inseparable at balls and banquets.

The House of Open Cages, also known by the more universal moniker for that sort of enterprise, the Seamstresses' Guild. What its members do goes almost without explanation, the Guildmistress having expanded what was once a modest bordello into a series of establishments and a network of tribute: any type of company a man or woman could desire, so long as they're willing to accept your coin and you obey the few rules laid down. Paramount among them being acceptance of the guild's stand against involuntary servitude. Cheat them, or flout their rules, and a john risks learning the hard way that the selling points of the House's working girls and courtesans aren't just their looks and charm- their 'education' including an emphasis on self-defense.

Leader: The Soothsayer, known to those who do business directly with her as Renáta Procházková, the most prominent (if not undisputed) figure in her field. There are enough legends, rumors, and half-truths surrounding the famed courtesan to print a series of books, and the woman rarely does much to dismiss them, even among those who work under her aegis. It has been said that her blindness, in reality a lifelong condition, was the price for unnatural visions and perception- a rumor which found traction among rivals who curse her as 'the Seer' out of her earshot. Despite her life's journey taking her ever closer to middle age, her fair features and courtesan's charms have spawned tales of dalliances with any number of figures in an attempt to explain her successes and good fortune: from the late Patricij, or (even more unlikely) his predecessor, to priestesses of Zlatážena.

What is known to be true, or at least what few documents have not been lost can confirm, is that despite her dubious reputation and any number of jokes about her friendship with 'other' noble-born bastards, Renáta is actually of legitimate birth (albeit still to commoners). Her parents were Dušan Procházka, a sword for hire and rumored assassin, and his wife Zora- an artist originally from the Universita district. Despite her low birth and her disability the girl was loved and received a relatively cosmopolitan upbringing, her mother teaching her what she could and her father doing his best to instruct his only child to defend herself. Though well taken care of for a few years after her parents' death to plague, eventually her caretaker squandered her inheritance and she fell into the life of a Seamstress for some years before falling in with former comrades of her father. Though their terms for their 'protection' were fair enough, the young woman was seemingly possessed with a drive to make the most of what fate had given her, and leveraged the carelessness of scoundrels around a blind prostitute and what she learned of them into an apprenticeship of sorts as a courtesan.

The rest, as they say, is history- the tale of how a blind Seamstress rose to be a respected and feared player in the underworld of Achát-Kámen is more than could be told in one sitting- her ruthlessness towards threats and her uncompromising stance against the specters of slavery and injustice, though, have proved to be more than apparent when it comes to the Soothsayer and her 'iron songbirds with wings of velvet'.

The Pekařův Cech, or the Baker's Guild, is centered around the square of Pekařská, where they set up their shops with assortments of all kinds of bread known to the people. The prices, especially of those specialty loaves, is not the lowest in the land--the guild sees to keep its members well compensated, and many fear the day when they would no longer stoke the fires of their hearths. However, they are always keen that each member make a contribution so that all residents and travelers have sufficient bread to sate the worst of their hunger, even if they cannot provide them with any needs greater than bread. Thus, they serve as an important social safety net, and all are aware of their status in maintaining the balance of society.

The Guild has an egalitarian structure, with a rotating, elected head. Any member in good standing, having earned the trust of the group, can bring up their issues with Guild business in the Chléb Sál, perhaps the grandest structure in the Pekařská, towering over all other buildings and providing the essential services of the neighborhood (such as the time: It is a clocktower as well). This building also functions as an informal magesterial chamber: Members can be summoned, or ask outsiders to be summoned, to this chamber to resolve disputes through arbitration among a body including the bakers and several local citizens of good repute--it is usually considered an honor to be asked to sit on these councils. helping its quasi-legal existence is a charter that urges agreements to be beneficial to all parties, that they leave the room with the presence of justice, rather than merely the absence of tension. Though it may not have much legal authority (even for its very existence), any seeking to question it would find that the Baker's guild is quite fond of this system, and an attack upon it would be an attack on their organization.

The current head of the Guild is Marcel Makovec, having won the election after the mid-term recall of specialty baker Nejezchleb. He has won election for three straight terms, providing a steady hand at controlling prices, keeping his ear to the ground and often fond of taking long walks in other parts of the city--occasionally taking a few loaves to the elderly and infirm in the poorer quarters especially. His notable limp came from time served in the milita when younger, before he took an arrow to the Achilles tendon (His own shop, the Conquest of Bread, is a reference to this aspect of his past). He is known as a jovial man, full of appetite (as his wide belly would suggest) but temperate of drink, and a cautious dealmaker most receptive to the power of those not in power, and willing to use his own mallet to ensure that his wealthier neighbors do not extoll too much of a toll upon the most needy in the city.

Faction: Svatý Kostel Piva
Rozkošné Zahrady Radegastu, Radegast's Pleasure Gardens. The home of debauchery, hedonism and all night long orgies and parties. Beer flows from the Garden's fountains every weekend when hundreds of followers of Radegast get together in the centric district of Starý Achát to celebrate the holiest of gods, Radegast, and his creation in Earth (beer) with massive orgies and drinking contests. The Church around Radegast, his worshippers and the Gardens, the Svatý Kostel Piva, the Holy Church of Beer (which, despite the name, acts generally as the Church of Alcoholic Drinks), is one of the most socially progressive and inclusive of them all, with one of their main rules being that there are no rules, and anyone (unless you are a kid) who wants it can become a follower of Radegast and enjoy his holy gift regardless of gender, who you fancy, sex or social status, you just have to be able to enjoy yourself and down some mugs of beer while you're at it. The political organisation of the Church is a meritocracy. That is, a meritocracy of the most hedonistic. People ascend in rank by drinking beer, and that has been a tradition since the start of Radegast's worship. The first rank is the Mug Fillers, who are people that have proven their worth to Radegast by downing an entire keg of traditional Pilsner in one night. These people are above normal worshippers, but not by much. After the Mug Fillers come the Bottle Holders, who are Mug Fillers that have drunk two entire kegs of lemon ale without going to the bathroom for one hour. Then come Radegast's Chosen, who are Bottle Holders who have drunk an entire bottle of Radegast's Own, a type of strong herbal concoction made out of anise, liquorice and wormwood, which has become a favourite for cleaning rust, much to the Church's disgrace. Finally, comes the "high priest" of the Church, the Holder of the Great Mug, who is chosen from the previous group through a beer drinking contest, in which three contestants try to drink an entire barrel of the strongest beer in the city, the Devil's Fire (made with the best wheat, herbs and water from the Mrakodrapy streams), without dying, collapsing or puking. Once recovered from the hangover, the winner is given the Great Mug, which was made when Radegast first taught the humans how to make beer, and is encrusted with gems, pearls and covered in gold and silver. Then, a month-long procession to the Mrakodrapy streams is made by the Mug Holder and Radegast's Worshippers to collect water for more Devil's Fire beer, walking down the streets as they sing "Poverty and Famine", the anthem of the Church (thanks, KC:D), giving Achát-Kámen some time to rest from the constant noise.

Leader: Blažej Zlamaljelito
Blažej, the son of the previous head brewer at the temple's brewery, and previous leader of the Temple Guard, the men in charge of protecting the temple and its occupants, he won the last drinking contest for the Great Mug at 21, being the youngest to achieve the rank. He is meek, gentle and kind, making him perfect for talking with people and defusing tense situations. That is, until he gets drunk. At parties and orgies, he becomes the single most attention-catching person in the world, a massive shift from his usual low-profile personality. He also becomes severely temperamental, making him a bad person to meet at that time. His frenzied discussions and crazy bets make him a liability to the temple's funds when drunk, but it is nothing compared to the sales of his special drinks. Thanks to his gregarious nature, he has learnt a great deal from his friends, the Artificers, who have taught him several engineering and scientific processes which have increased the Brewery's profits exponentially. This has set him on a path of modernisation of the Church, with not only new brewing methods but actual economic, religious and structural reforms.

Faction: Divoké žehličky, The Wild Irons, are the masters of hammer and shuttle in Achát-Kámen. From the most intricate automaton to the humble nail, all who work a fire and craft from metal call the Irons their brotherhood, as do the women who work the loom. Along the street of cunning artificers they ply their trade, and in times of wars past the Irons have supplied the blades and bulwarks with which the lords of the city made ghosts of it's enemies. In times of peace, their finery and contraptions delight and impress. Legendary in their skill and notorious in their pride, a streak of free-mindedness (and recalcitrance) has always run through the forgers, tinkerers, and weavers of Ořechov. Now, many in the guild who see the nobles most likely to inherit the seat of the Palac surmise that none of them should rule, and await a worthy contender. Still others, in quieter tones, put forward that perhaps there should be no Patricij at all.

Leader: "Zikmund the Wall" Zikmund Nazeď, known simply as Otec to his brothers and sisters in the Irons, fashions the finest armor in the city for both the court and the battlefield alike. A mountain of a man with a long beard and bald head, and one false front tooth shaped from watered steel. Gregarious and slow to anger, when he isn't sharing bread (or a few drinks) with whoever takes him up on the offer, he can be found at the guild hall making sure the concerns of his 'family' are met.

The prices, especially of those specialty loaves, is not the lowest in the land--the guild sees to keep its members well compensated, and many fear the day when they would no longer stoke the fires of their hearths.
