- William Shirer, Berlin, 1945

Late 1946

Image

How can one find words to convey truthfully and accurately the picture of a great capital destroyed almost beyond recognition; of a once almighty nation that ceased to exist; of a conquering people who were so brutally arrogant and so blindingly sure of their mission as a master race … whom you now see poking about their ruins, broken, dazed, shivering, hungry human beings without will or purpose or direction.
- William Shirer, Berlin, 1945

They also point out that the propaganda is full of mistranslations, including the line “Charles De Gaulle, they are big leader.”
* An investigation is carried out into the death of US soldiers in France. Cooperation between the local French police office and the US military determines it was members of the Liberation-sud that had gotten into a dispute with the local US military and led to the incident. * The British forces conduct a successful campaign against the Greek Communist forces. Evacuating villages under the pretense of communist attacks, they deprive the Communist of material support.
* The United Kingdom begins to send journalists, printing press equipment, and crystal radio receiver kits across Europe. This includes charitable donations shipped to countries currently under Red Army reconstruction. The BBC continues to broadcast to eastern Europe. *The Malta government agree to hold a referendum on the future of the Island. The options are complete independence, dominion status within the UK, or integration into the United Kingdom. The referendum will be held in late 1947.
* Northern France institutes its new constitution. A Popular Front, composed of Communist and Socialist starts to rule the country. Leon Blum is made President of France, while Thorez becomes head of the General Secretary of the Popular Front. The left faction of the Popular Republican Movement, is also invited to join the government. Breton nationalists, Anarchist, and Trotskists are also permitted to join the government, and some do.
* Northern France announces the Entente des nations libérées, as a successor to the French Empire. In this union, France and its colonies will serve as equals. A Parliament of the Liberated is proposed as the ruling body of this union. In its first meeting, representatives from all of France’s empire arrive. As the French colonial administration and Empire is still loyal to the government in Marsielles, many of the representatives were already living in Paris or had to arrive clandestinely.
*Northern France forms the International Prisoners Solidarity Fund, which allows for the settlement of political prisoners into France. Special emphasis is given to French and Jewish prisoners. With the promise of free land, a number of Jewish and French individuals move to Northern France. The Soviet union provides aid to this effort.

* In Northern France, public tribunals being rounding up collaborators and Fascists. The worst are executed. Property is seized and redistributed.
* The Redemption Movement is launched in Breton territory. The French government attempts to demonstrate how Breton nationalists collaborated with the Nazis to engage in Fascist behaviors and assisted in the Holocaust. These efforts mostly fall on flat ears. The Bretons state that they certainly did not participate in the Holocaust. And even if they did participate in the Holocaust, would it have been a bad thing?
* Northern France also engages in reconstruction, focusing on improving infrastructure and agriculture.

The film is sensationalist in its content featuring realistic portrayals of war, alongside sexuality and alcohol usage.
* A novel is also unveiled, which focuses on the life of General Boulanger's mistress. It covers the growing military pressure on General Boulanger’s regime and also his increasingly instability in the phase of political crisis.
* The last day of the festival is a scene of tragedy, however. As Diego Rivera is giving a talk on his new painting that is being unveiled for the festival, an explosion occurs. A suitcase at the front of audience had a bomb in it, which killed several spectators and mortally wounded Rivera. French authorities blame right wing partisans for the assault. The art world is shocked.
* In response to this assault, the French Commune launches a raid on the Ceux de la Libération. The French are able to quickly dismember a unit of the force, suggesting they had inside intelligence. The French communist reveal documents showing the Ceux were behind the assault on the expo.
* The Northern French recruit a unit.
* The Organisation civile et militaire, agrees to a cease fire with the French Commune and integration into the New French state. The rebels agree to lay down their arms.
* The French Commune gives 90 days for any rebels to lay down their arms. The Bretons and conservatives refuse to do so. The Commune launches assaults on the Ceux, Breton Nationalists, and Armée secrete, using one force a piece. With the Ceux forces already driven underground, the French communists only catch a few more members of the movement. Against the Bretons, they win several decisive engagements, moving into Bretton territory fully. The Breton rebels lose a unit. The nationalists continue to use hit and run tactics.
* Against the Gaullist forces, however, the efforts go in the different direction. Boasting conventional weaponry that rivals the communists, the Army Secrete is able to bring decisive firepower against the Communist. The unit sent to fight them is scattered and defeated.
* A General Strike occurs in Southern France. Unions stop working in factories. Communist and Socialists begin to protest against the USA’s occupation of Southern France. They demand incorporation into the French Commune and an improvement of the standard of living across Southern France.
* The Strikes turn violent as protestors begin occupying police stations and organizing communes of their own. Several police stations are bombed by the protestors, as the Southern French government and its Anglo allies work to suppress the strike. A federal system is implemented with significant devolution for Flanders and Wallonia.
* In Luxembourg, the nationalist “Resistance Government” declares the Republic of Luxembourg, backed by the Communists. Émile Krieps becomes the first President, with communists controlling key roles. The communist party is strengthened.
* The monarchies are abolished in each of these areas. The governments in exile in London loudly oppose this anti-democratic move.

Many elect to return to their homes. However, a growing faction demands that they be allowed to immigrate to the British territories in the Middle East.
* The Soviet Union opens military academies in the low countries. Officers from France, and the low countries form the inaugural class. The Red army focuses on teaching the tactics it used to win the World War to the western officers.

* In Austria, the Soviet Union is able to arrest the leadership of several Partisan cells, crippling their ability to organize. Attempts to paint these Partisans as Fascist, however, falls on deaf ears.
* Bulgarian secret service intercepts documents that demonstrate the Soviet Union was instructing the Communist party to form alliances with other leftist parties to frustrate the efforts of the ruling government.
* US Soldiers report that Communist agents have approached them with propaganda, encouraging them to engage in acts of destruction. Likewise white officers find pamphlets telling colored soldiers that they are about to return to the USA where Jim Crow laws and racism await them. Should they suffer for such a country? US military police and intelligence destroy these documents before them become widespread.
-MIDDLE EAST-
* The British Royal Navy intercepts a number of ships bound for the territory of Palestine. Thousands of Jewish individuals are attempting to enter the Palestinian territory, departing the war torn Europe.
* The United states deploys one military unit to Turkey.
* The Turkish government rejects an effort by the USSR to remain neutral, citing continued Communist advancement across the region.
* The British send surplus military equipment to the Jordanian armed forces.
* Sir Miles Lampson, the British ambassador to Egypt who had been the country’s de facto ruler during WW2, is publicly recalled and replaced by John Hamilton. The UK vacates its military bases in Cairo, Alexandria, and the Nile Valley, only retaining bases in the Suez canal. The Prime Minister also orders a British Humanitarian Mission in Egypt to begin prevention and medical treatment for bilharzia and ophthalmia, as well as establishing clean and safe water supplies for the poorest parts of Egypt. These moves boost British popularity in Egypt.
* In Algeria, the National Liberation Front emerges. A coalition of the Communist party and the Movement for the Triumph of Democratic Liberties, the party begins peaceful agitation for the independence of Algeria. The French police begin arresting members of the movement.
* The Arab Liberation Bloc emerges in Syria. A union of the Communist Party and the Baathist political organization, it seeks a free greater Syria, which would include the territories of Both Syria and Lebanon. The French force begin to clamp down on the movement.
* The British capture French Commune agents attempting to infiltrate Iraq via Syria. Under interrogation the French agents reveal they had instructions to create a united front of Communists, Kurdish nationalists, and student groups to undermine British presence in the country.
* Tipped off by information “extracted” from the French Communists, the British also capture a group of Soviet agents trying to enter the country.
* Shukri al-Quwatli states that Syria is carefully considering its options on the topic of which France to support. He states that he will do what is best for Syria and is considering joining the new organization proposed by the French Commune. He states that his government will cooperate with Paris to improve the world but rejects working with the local communist party.
* The Soviet Union and Iran hold negotiations over the Soviet Unions occupation of Iranian territory. The negotiations draw on, before the Soviet Union agrees to a modest oil price agreement and autonomy for the Azerbijanis and Kurds.
*The Soviet Union withdraws its unit from Iran, however it leaves behind trucks and other equipment that slow down Iranian movements to the area.
* The Iranians work to reestablish control over the region. They run into stiff resistance, with Kurds, Azerbaijanis, and other socialist forces ambushing and attacking them.
* Reza Shah personally leads the Iranian army in its attempts to reclaim the region. His caravan comes under attack one night. The resulting firefight sees his guard overwhelmed. In a bold move, the attackers are able to grab the Shah and spirit him away. The King of King has been kidnapped!
* The seizure of the Shah by rebels in the north causes an outcry in the Iranian capital. Prime minister Ahmad Qavam argues that the Soviet Union had a hand in betraying the King, and that they will make the government pay. The opposition and the ruling party of Iran speak with a united voice.
*Taking advantage of the Chaos, the Tudeh party launches a series of assault against the government. They are able to knock out oil production in parts of the country. The Tudeh party’s weapons capability has increased, which some state is due to the influx of German weapons into the country from past dealings.
*In the North, the rebels also prove capable, fighting the Iranian army to a standstill as the year closes.
*Arab countries as a whole begin to consider the effects and accomplishments of the Bloudan Conference in Syria, which lasted for three days last June. Attended by the Arab League Council, from dispatches to foreign leaders it can be inferred that the meeting held mixed results: the Arab League seems prepared and willing to enter into talks with the British Mandate in Palestine, as well as accepting Jewish presence under a free Palestine, and a further extension of the British mandate, but the proposal that British talks begin by September seems to have slipped by unnoticed. It is expected, leaks say, that the Arab League Council intends to bring the issue to the United Nations.
*A branch of the Muslim Brotherhood opens in Jordan. In Egypt, the Muslim Brothers clashes in the street with the Wafd Party.
*The right-wing Irgun takes credit for the bombing of the King David Hotel, an attack that leaves 91 people of different nationalities and backgrounds dead and more injured. Winston Churchill calls for further Jewish Zionist settlement in the region, laying the blame on the Mandate system, while Chief Secretary for the Government of Palestine, Sir John Shaw, is alleged to have said "British, Arabs, Jews, Greeks, Armenians; senior officers, police, my orderly, my chauffeur, messengers, guards, men and women—young and old—they were my friends."
*Further actions are taken throughout the year by Zionist organizations, still largely targeting the British. As the insurgency continues to rage, the British police and armed forces have no choice but to reeact, preventing any significant damage to their control over the region.
*Palestinian nationalists begin to reorganize themselves, albeit in a weaker form. Jamal al-Husayni, now returned from exile, sets about reconstituting and enlarging the Arab Higher Committee, which already carries with it the distinction of recognition from the Arab League. Mohammed Amin al-Husseini, his relation and the notorious Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, has not yet returned from his exile in Paris.
*Mustafa Barzani, patriarch of the powerful Barzani clan, demonstrates his loyalties to the Kurdish cause not just in Mahabad, but in his base of power, Iraqi Kurdistan. With the backing of the tribal elders and a deal of manouvering that wins over Kurdish Communists, he declares the formation of the Kurdish Democratic Party, which avoids social and economic topics in its platforms to focus on demanding the autonomy of Kurdistan.
*The al-Said government calls for elections in the midst of Iraqi political turmoil. The government parties win handily, with only two opposition parties standing. The election is boycotted by five parties, predominantly of liberal, left-wing, and nationalist persuasions.
*The Jewish-led, Communist-sympathizing Anti-Zionist League in Iraq is declared illegal by the government. They are charged, for some reason, with Zionism. Arab monarchs, man.
*Azeris and Persians alike reel from the assassination of Iranian Azeri poet Ahmad Kasravi earlier in the year. Fedaiyin-e Islam takes credit for these actions, garnering some support from the marājiʿ but raising eyebrows as to their actual political vision for the nation, as they denounce both the East and West, but refuse to outright condemn the Shah – only the new government of Ahmad Qavam.
*The first six months of Shah Mahdoun Khan's tenure as Prime Minister of Afghanistan continues apace. For the moment, hope emerges on the horizon, a hope that the centerpiece of the Great Game might find peace, stability, and liberty.

**In Britain, the heaviest snowfall of the 20th century brings much of the country to a standstill, disrupting the railways, freezing or staving animal herds, and causing serious hardship. The Netherlands experiences its worst winter since 1790, closing schools and causing major civil disorder. Hundreds die in Berlin from the extreme cold and lack of food, with more deaths reported across Germany. A mob attacks a goods train carrying coal in Copenhagen at the height of the desperation. In Ireland, businesses are closed and domestic gas supplies are heavily restricted and rationed. Northern France is also badly hit by the extreme cold, as protests against coal rationing set in. In Central Europe and the southern Baltics, heavy snowfall and intense cold is also witnessed, leading to significant loss of life.

The government requires the workers cooperatives to pay a small fee based on profits from their actions. However, since some of these workers collectives are anarchists they tell the government to shove off.

The government encourages collectives but allows for the maintenance of private property.

The Bretons are executed for collaborating with Fascists. The remaining Breton leadership is told to lay down their arms or suffer the same fate. The Breton leadership agrees to accept autonomy.
* The Armée secrete continue to attract more support in the rural parts of France.
* The situation in Southern France grows intense. More workers take to the streets and unions see their support grow. Charles De Gaulle meets with union leadership and offers concessions, including promising to implement many of the planks from the leadership of the National Resistance Council.
* With their demands met, some union leaders and workers agree to return to work. Others refuse, however. It appears the working class in France is fractured, just like the nation. Rail workers and students join the protest, demanding De Gaulle resign and union with the north being established. There are clashes amongst workers as strikers fight scabs.
*Discontent grows amongst the military and police of Southern France. Many conscripts wonder why they are being sent off to fight for an Empire in Vietnam or Madagascar when their homeland is still in ruins. Some refuse to engage in actions against rioters.
* The Easter Coup: Early on Easter day Marseilles radio stations begin to fall silent and periodic gunfire is heard. Rumors spread quickly that the FTP is launching a coup against Charles De Gaulle and that one unit’s worth of the French army has defected to join the rebellion.
* In a confusing day, it appears Charles De Gaulle has been seized by the FTP and taken prisoner. However, French forces aided by the US and British military, are able to liberate De Gaulle from the ministry building in which he is being held. De Gaulle is then escorted by the Americans to North Africa, where he arrives in Algeria. It appears his flight there was not of his own volition.
* In Marseilles, there is fierce fighting between the Anglos and French conservatives on one side and the communists on the other. After the liberation of De Gaulle, the Anglo forces withdraw to their military bases outside the city.
* The interim government announces plans to unite with Northern France, once the French homeland is free from foreign occupation.
* Radios announce that Pierre Mendes France is the new President of French Republic and that Henri Rol-Tanguy is the new commander of the French military. The new President announces that integration into the French commune is ongoing.
* For the first day or so after the coup, things are quiet, earily so. However, it becomes apparent that many in Southern France are opposed to this coup. Strikers and protestors take to the streets in Marseilles, Lyon and elsewhere, crying out against the foul coup. Barricades once manned by communists are now manned by Gaullists, along with a whole scattering of ideologies.
* Four French communist units enter Southern France, as does an airforce unit. One unit moves to occupy Marseilles, while the other three engage with Gaullists and other resistors across Southern France. The Initial attacks see one French Communist and one French military unit both decimated in a border battle. A secret army unit is also destroyed but it is quickly replaced by local units.
* Ivan Konev is seen in Southern France, visiting British and American military HQ outside of Marseilles. After his visit, activities by the Americans and British stop.
*The Soviet Union loans four air units to the French Commune. These units are seen circling the foreign military bases, while another two units attack the French airforce. Despite having a technological superiority the chaos from the coup causes organizational problems and one French airforce unit is destroyed.
*The FTP are able to seize control of Lyon and Limoges. Local communist cells rise up, aided by defectors from the police. However an attempt to seize Bordeaux ends in disaster for the FTP. The operation is delayed by several hours and as they begin to assault the city they run right into prepared French conservative forces. The Army Secrete and French military forces decimate the FTP and destroy one unit.
* As June ends, France is heavily divided. Toulouse and Boudreaux remains under the control of Charles De Gaulle. The French commune now control Lyon and Limoges. The interim government controls Marsielles and Montpellier and is working to integrate into Northern France. American and British forces remain in military bases outside Marseilles or in Toulouse. Gaullist and Socialist resistance occur across occupied areas.
* In Italy rumors begin to grow of an organization called Propaganda Due. With membership coming from all ranks of the elites, it is stated to be a new deep state that is working to keep Italy free from Communism. The coup in France, on eastern no less, has spurred Italian to join the movement.
* In Bulgaria Free Mason imagery appears to become more common among the elites. An anonymous publication states that the Bulgarian armed forces will not let communism infiltrate the country.
* In Bulgaria, the American Office of Strategic Services and the Bulgarian secret service release a report detailing that left-wing IMRO elements had carried out the terrorist attack on the Tsar’s household. Furthermore, these IMRO individuals had received orders and supplies from a code-named Mr. Ivan, a Russian in the Ministry of State Security. Even the wording left in the note was dictated by Moscow. Bulgarian government officials decry this vile communist plot.
* Protests and riots continue across Bulgaria. Protests claim that Bulgaria’s shipment of food and continued military occupation of Macedon have shown that it is more interested in territorial expansion than helping its citizens. Liberal and conservative elements begin to join with the protestors and demand the resignation of the government.
* The IMRO, which has suffered through tensions for years, officially has a schism. The IMRO United break ranks with the IMRO. They argue for an independent socialist Macedon, with perhaps some ties to Yugoslavia.
* With the left-wing elements purged from the Ranks, the IMRO officially states it will cooperate with the US government in pacifying Macedon from subversive elements. It requests that a referendum be held, with the options either being an independent state or a union with Bulgaria.
* Open warfare erupts in Macedon. The PLA declares its intentional to liberate Macedon from foreign occupiers and reunite the country with Yugoslavia. They attack elements of the IMRO and destroy many of them. They engage in clashes with Western and Bulgarian forces.
* The Greek army is able to make gains against the communist forces. Superior weaponry and supplies, provided by Washington DC, proves to be the decisive edge in the conflict. A unit of the Greek communist forces is destroyed in fierce fighting. However, a continued stream of supplies keeps the Greek communists in fighting spirits.
*While their efforts to expand south have been stymied, the Greek Communist party is able to solidify its control of Northern Greece, especially near the Albanian border. Left-wing Greeks from the South have started moving to areas controlled by the party.
* Attempts by the nationalist government to move rural Greeks to deny the communist support ends up causing violence in the countryside, as many towns resist. This causes the destruction of a unit in Greece from this new form of guerilla warfare.
* A British military unit clashes with communists and rural partisans. The guerrilla warfare against the British leave the unit bogged down, but the Greek communists are limited in their ability to act.
* Photos and reports are released by the Communist Party of Greece that the Nationalist government is kidnapping children and selling them to American families. American and Turkish newspapers report the story. This causes riots in southern Greek cities. An orphanage that is allegedly part of the plot is stormed and burned down in Athens.
* The Greek forces continue to find supplies in Crete, suggesting that Communist forces are trying to support rebels in the region.
* Federal Socialist Republic of Germany is declared the official government of Germany, replacing the German Anti-Fascist Transitional Authority. It is a Soviet Union inspired federal model, with lower legislative bodies electing members of higher legislative bodies. At the top is the State Council of the Republic, with Wilhelm Pileck being elected President.
* Controversially, the German republic creates a military. This is met with widespread protests from political parties outside the newly emerging soviet camp, and even some concerns from left-wing groups within the Soviet bloc. Many wonder aloud if the German people have been rehabilitated enough to possess an army.
* The newly emerging German government has only a tepid response to the protests in Hamburg as the central government formalizes control in the rest of the country. The riots intensify and partisans in northern Germany take advantage of the opportunity and move into the city. The partisans come from liberal, conservative, and fascist backgrounds but are united in driving out the Communists. They succeed and lynch several communist officials in the area. The leaders of Partisan bands and city officials form the Council of Hamburg and declare themselves independent of the German state. They call for Western Support. Rumors suggest that former Nazis are migrating to the area.
*German officials arrest several individuals protesting in Schleswig. The protestors are demanding that a referendum be held to unite with Denmark. While some of these individuals are Danish in origin others are Germans who are claiming to be Danish, called bacon Danes in some newspapers. The Danish government suggests that a referendum should be held in the territory.
* The Soviet Union provides assistance for refugees leaving Germany. This lessens the cost of the refugee crisis.
* The Soviet Union cooperates with the German government in attacking known Partisan bases. They drive the Partisans underground.
* In the Netherlands, the communist government begins transferring industry to the Northern Provinces. These areas suffered less bombing and devastation during the war.
* The Communist party of the Netherlands undergoes factional strike. Junior leadership accuses Paul de Groot of being a nazi collaborator and attempts to replace him as party leader with Hannie Schaft. Paul de Groot responds by shouting, “ I am the leader of the Communist Party! I am Groot!”. Paul de Groot claims that Hannie Schaft was executed by the Nazis during the end of the war, and this current figure is a doubleganger for capitalist interests. He is removed from power. This factional infighting appears across the newspapers and party circulars. It greatly hurts the popularity and credibility of the new government.
* Hannie Schaft gives a series of speeches where she claims Charles De Gaulle has divided up France and set out to spill the blood of his fellow countryman.
*In Bulgaria, the Zveno movement and the Agrarian National Movement form a political alliance. The advancement of the communists has fightened the leadership of the movement who has broken rank with the other leftist movements to join with Zveno. The Agrarian national movement orders its members to leave the protests.
* The condemnation of the Ratnicks passes through the Bulgarian congress. This causes the Zveno movement to lose some support among the military and right-wing elements. With the passing of the bill, the protests subside for now.
* Bulgaria reduces tariffs on good exported from Macedon. This helps to stabilize the Macedonian economy but does little to quiet critics that the government is putting expansion into Macedon over the interests of the populace. Particularly upset are the urban workers.
* The baby Tsar attends a ceremony for those killed in the terrorist attack against his government. The ceremony shows the continued strength and resolve of the Bulgarian state and its refusal to bow to Macedon terrorism. The funeral turns into an impromptu rally, as many in attendance sing patriotic chants and demand the annexation of Macedon.
*Czechoslovakia and the USSR sign a series of agreements. These agreements include trade and a mutual defense treaty.
* In Austria elections are held. The Social Democrat Karl Renner, wins the presidency but the Communist party wins a majority of votes in the Parliamentary election. * Philiph Southwell is appointed as the new leader of the Anglo Persian Oil Company. He negotiates a new deal with the Iranian government, where a joint 50/50 split is proposed in profit sharing. The Iranian parliament votes to accept this deal. The British invest more money into the oil company, providing material aid to help assuage the grievances in Iran.
* Fighting continues between the separatist in the North and the government of Iran. The Iranian army searches in vain for the Shah. The Iranian army expresses doubt that the shah still remains in the territory of Iran and points a finger towards the Soviet Union, accusing them of kidnapping their King.
* As the months drag on after the Shah’s departure, some Iranian elites wonder if they really need a king. The Iran Party and the Tudeh party unite in a parliamentary alliance and begin passing anti-Shah and anti-western resolutions. The Tudeh party begins formenting disconnect amongst the population and leads them in several protests against the absent Shah. Without formal leadership, the army is paralyzed against the protestors. Facing public protests, and with an ineffective army, the government of Iran passes a constitutional reform and establishes a secular federal state. They ask the Soviet Union to negotiate with seperatists in the North. The government of Iran continues to honor oil deals with the UK. The nationalists in the government demand the Soviet Union withdraw, however.
